I'll try to find those articles I read about it.
Found the link I was looking for off deadspin
Here is the article in question
And I was wrong about losing a mil
Cohen and Kopelman now estimate that ESPN Mobile will lure a mere 30,000 subscribers over the course of this financial year, well below their original estimate of 240,000. Along with the losses generated by a second Disney-branded phone service, ML expects that the Mouse will lose $135 million on its experiment in FY06.
That's the money shot right there. Or the fatality. Depends on how much you like seeing Trey Wingo on your tv.Last edited by The C; 08-01-2006, 09:10 PM.Comment

I just realized that I cost ESPN a possible sale. I bet they'll send out the John Clayton hit squad after me.Last edited by The C; 08-01-2006, 09:16 PM.Comment

Re: ESPN Mobile
I will admit I was intrigued at the outset... Then as I thought about it more, it didn't offer anything that I couldn't do once I got to a computer. I'm not gonna be stopped at a red light and suddenly decide to check my fantasy scores. Plus the money they were talking about was just ridiculous...Comment

Re: ESPN Mobile
this was a stupid idea
ESPN is available on any phone with access to the internet, why not just make it a service that you signup for and pay a monthly fee, $5-10, to view the video, stats, etc. If you want, just sell the rights to 1 carrier and you will make a lot more money.Comment

Re: ESPN Mobile
Its completely unecessary. If you have a desk job you can check scores fairly easily, but since so few teams have day games during the week anymore it seems less important. And most NFL games are on Sundays when most people don't work rendering this thing useless. If it was a cheap add-on to an existing service they yeah some people would go for it. Since its a really expensive service that requires you to buy a new phone it just seems useless.Comment

Re: ESPN Mobile
I saw a CNBC piece about the eventual demise of this. Apparently ESPN is sticking with it at least til the end of the calendar year and then re-assess it.
Personally I think it was a good idea in theory as it helps to extend the brand but sometimes it can backfire. ESPN has overextended itself. I'd be intrigued to know just how well the ESPN Insider subscriptions are doing on the website.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Glad to see ESPN get this shoved up their kissers.
Take care,
