Re: Highly recommended movies, you have yet to see...

Today I watched a classic movie that i've always wanted to see

THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE

What a great film! It's a western but in the loosest sense of the word as there's not that much cowboy kinda stuff. The movie is a little stagey at times but the acting makes up for it. Here's the IMDB plot summary:

Senator Ranse Stoddard returns to the city Shinbone in the Wild West to go to the funeral of his friend, Tom Doniphon. To a journalist, who's wondering what the senator is doing in Shinbone, he tells how his career started as "the man who shot Liberty Valance". As a lawyer he went to Shinbone, where he met his wife Hallie and Tom Doniphon. He taught the people there to read and write. Then he met the greatest bandit of the region, Liberty Valance....
Something the summary left out was the fact that Stoddard taught the towns folk to read and write so that they may be able to vote for statehood.

Anywho it's a great film with very good acting from Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, (very underrated actor at times) Lee Marvin, and Edmond O'brien.

The film does have some broad comedic flourishes to it that keeps the mood light and entertaining. My only complaint is that it got kinda preachy-like near the middle of the film but that's to be expected from a movie in the early '60s.

If you like good acting with a slight touch of comedy that also brings home a message then this is a pretty good flick. Either way I highly recommend it.

I recommend everyone to watch the first half of The Forgotten, and then turn it off before the first half gets ruined by the last half.

imo, the best western ever made is "Lonesome Dove" (with Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones, Diane Lane)...if you havent seen it you must

some other somewhat obscure movies i recommend...
-Rush (about a Narc that gets in too deep)
          -Boiler Room
-Paid in Full (good gansta movie based in the 80s)
-True Romance (script by Quentin Tarrantino)
          -The Sandlot
-Texasville (funny movie about people in the oil business in Texas during a not so funny time for the oil business in Texas)
-Primary Colors (funny movie about politics)
          -Suicide Kings
          -The Game

            Wha?!

I guess diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks applies here but if you haven't please watch John Wayne's THE SEARCHERS. I think that's more fitting of "best western ever".

Yep but haven't seen it in a while. I think the DVD is at the library so I may take it out and watch it again.

"Defending Your Life", a 1991 flick starring Albert Brooks, Meryl Streep, and Rip Torn. The premise is simple enough-Brooks gets killed in a car accident at a young age, and finds himself in Judgement City defending his life and right to move along in the universe. Torn is perfect as his defense attorney as is Lee Grant as the prsecution, although these labels are not referred to in the movie. This movie got great reviews, had a great cast (Brooks had recently been nominated for an Oscar in "Broadcast News") but somehow ended up flopping at the box office. This is my alltime favorite comedy, right up there with "Tootsie".

Pretty good movie, but I'd recommend "Shane" and "Warlock" as westerns.

I have to see that one. I've heard nothing but praise about it from this board, but a lot of OSers like "Animal House" so go figure.
