Re: Outkast: Idlewild
Well I don't know what they were smoking when they made this. For one this is not hiphop at all. I don't even know what to consider this. Trying something new is ok but this is just trash. The only good songs are hollywood divorce and the train.Comment

Re: Outkast: Idlewild
Not hip-hop? What are you smoking? Anyway, here's my short review that I posted for RYM.
Keeping with their new found tradition to produce albums under a "seperate but together" atmosphere, OutKast pushes through 25 tracks and 79 minutes on the "Idlewild" soundtrack and produces a superb album surrounded by needless filler. The first half of the album is classic OutKast; Dre actually raps, there's experimentation, and all this entertains the listener. Once the listener gets past "Hollywood Divorce," which features Lil' Wayne and Snoop Dogg on the mic, there are two good tracks left to hear. Janelle Monae's featured vocals on "Call the Law" is easily the high point of the second half, but even her show-stealing vocals aren't enough to make the last half of the album more than decent; however, decent OutKast still produces better music than the majority of mainstream r&b/hip-hop artists. While the last half isn't memorable or executed as well as the first half of the album, it is still entertaining to go through and multiple spins will flesh out the last half even more. Thankfully, in some weird, twisted way, OutKast decided to put the biggest filler track at the very end and unless the listener likes subjecting themselves to 9 minutes of horrible music (even in OutKast terms), then they have a higher threshold for pain than myself.
As it stands, "Idlewild" is a strong 12 track album, but surrounded by just as many decent tracks and needless interludes.
Favorite tracks: Idlewild Blue (Don't Chu Worry 'Bout Me), Mighty O, Morris Brown, Call the Lawn, and The Train.
I gave it 3.5/5 stars.

Re: Outkast: Idlewild
So am I the only one to go out and actually see Idlewild? Well, I saw it today and absolutely loved the movie/musical. My level of respect for Andre Benjamin and Andre Patton has been taken up a level. I'm so proud of those guys. I was just thinking on the way home that maybe I've been unfair of my assessment of where they are as artist their careers. Selfishly, I've been hoping for another Southernplaylistc/Atliens-esque album for the last couple years and have been disappointed when Kast hasn't given us that. Well, I realized that i'm pretty much the same age as Dre and Big Boi. Southernplayalistic is over 13 years old. I'm not the same person I was back in 1992-1993. I don't even have the same musical taste as I did back then. I think my musical taste has evolved. Well, Dre and Big Boi definitely aren't the same guys they were back then and I know their musical tastes have changed too. I've always admired the way they seem to evolved on release of each new album but took a minute for the newer stuff, Speakerbox/Love Below, to grow on me. It just has taken a while for me to realized is this is who Outkast is today. These guys are older, wiser, and more mature. So I shouldn't expect more songs about pimping hoes, blowing trees, and chasing women. I know that's obvious but just seeing Idlewild help me come to this realization. These guys are going to a whole new level as artist and it's not easy to see that they are 2 of the most talented cats in the game today. Big Boi has really surprised me with his acting ability. If you see the movie, stay to watch the credits, 3000 puts on a show. That said, Idlewild, the cd is far from a horrible cd. I think it just represents where they are in their lives today as opposed to the stuff we're used to and what we want to hear from them. I wish more of the songs were performed in the movie. They played a few and also had songs from Speakerboxx/Love Below in the movie. Good CD, Good movie."Never trust a big butt and a smile."-Ricky Bell

Re: Outkast: Idlewild
Great movie. I think Big Boi did a better job than Dre in the movie but I really enjoyed it. The CD is much better when you watch the movie. I wasn't feelin the soundtrack at first, but once you watch the movie, the soundtrack is 10x's better."Maybe I can't win. But to beat me, he's going to have to kill me. And to kill me, he's gonna have to have the heart to stand in front of me. And to do that, he's got to be willing to die himself. I don't know if he's ready to do that."Comment
