NOTE: I know this is dealing with one of the most tragic situations in United States history and this could easily get political so I'm just asking for anyone who seen the documentary to just tell me how was the documentary. Thanks.

"When the Levees Broke" on HBO
Did anyone see this last night? I have it on my DVR and I'm planning on watching it tonight and watch the second part tonight also.
NOTE: I know this is dealing with one of the most tragic situations in United States history and this could easily get political so I'm just asking for anyone who seen the documentary to just tell me how was the documentary. Thanks.I have more respect for a man who let's me know where he stands, even if he's wrong. Than the one who comes up like an angel and is nothing but a devil. - Malcolm XTags: None -
Re: "When the Levees Broke" on HBO
I saw it last night. Freaking incredible. My first impression was complete disbelief this happened in my country. And that if Clinton was the President of this catastrophe he would have been beheaded. My second thought was to this day every public official is still passing the buck. Mayor Nagin saying that is was the Governors responsibility to bring in the Feds, "I was just the Mayor". Then the shots of all the dead just laying in streets, floating, huge bloated bodies....pisses you off. -

Spike knocked this one out of the park. The first part was great.Comment

Really impressive.
And I was able to discover one of the greatest "names" ever.

Agreed. I was extremely skeptical thinking it was going to be biased. But, it really wasn't (except for the part about the levees being blown up, which was only about a minute).

Amazing, I love the interviews and the history of when Hurricane Betty in 1965 and comparing it to. Hearing from everyone from the Mayor to people who have gone through both big hurricanes.Comment

Re: "When the Levees Broke" on HBO
But, that was the only part that was "conspiracy theory". Everything else was basically the human element and the blame game that followed. Which was nice since it didn't center around spaceships and black helicopters.Comment

Re: "When the Levees Broke" on HBO
Easy dude. All I meant was that this was the only part of the first part that dealt with "Consiracy Theory". There is absolutely no basis to the acusation. Simply that a couple of people heard an "explosion", which as you pointed out could have been the barge busting through the concrete wall section of the levee that was presented as the other side.
But, that was the only part that was "conspiracy theory". Everything else was basically the human element and the blame game that followed. Which was nice since it didn't center around spaceships and black helicopters.
Thats not "conspiracy theory"...its just a theory. Some people believe the levees were blown based on the explosion they heard and the fact that there were past instances (as shown in the film) years ago where the leeves were blown to save other parts of the city. I'm not saying that it happened during Katrina but to discount that just because you dont agree with it is ignorant.Comment

For the record, I'm discounting it because there is no proof of anything happening. But if you feel the need to call me ignorant, feel free.
And also, for the record, if someone feels the government blew up the levees for the sole purpose of saving other parts of the city at the expense of the lives of poor people, it is not only ignorant but also a "conspiracy theory". A "theory" must be supported by evidence.
Now, I will no longer respond to your responses. This was intended to be a discussion about the documentary and not politics. (I'm pretty sure you know this) However, if you feel the need for further clarification or further name calling, you can always PM me.Comment

Re: "When the Levees Broke" on HBO
I tried watching for the second time (left out of the advance screening at work) last night, its just still too fresh for me. My childhood home is still gutted and cant be lived in. This storm and the events around it destroyed alot lives of people close to me and its a tad much to live through it again watching this documentary.Comment

Re: "When the Levees Broke" on HBO
It's funny yet appropriate that this topic is on a messaage board where there is constant bickering back and forth about videogames. If this documentary doesn't put things into proper perspective for you then nothing will. The series of shots of the dead...easily the most lasting images for me from both parts. Very impressive work from Spike Lee.Comment

Re: "When the Levees Broke" on HBO
I thought it was very well done as well... could have done without the theories on the so called explosions (from both sides... just didn't see the need to include it one way or another) but otherwise, it was a wonderful documentary.http://flotn.blogspot.com

Re: "When the Levees Broke" on HBO
Well its a active part of people's memory of the event... and it did happen before during a similar situation. I dont think it happened that way this time lack of trust is a major issue for poor folksComment
