Final Thoughts On The 2006 Summer Movie Season

Here are the top ten films this summer in terms box office dollars. Talladega Nights still has a chance to pass MI:3 since it’s still in the theatres.

    1. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
    2. Cars
    3. X-Men: The Last Stand
    4. The Da Vinci Code
    5. Superman Returns
    6. Over The Hedge
    7. Click
    8. Mission Impossible 3
    9. Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby
    10. The Devil Wears Prada

I saw 15 films this summer. This is the most I’ve since 1999.

    Using a GPA system (I assigned a 1 for D) the 15 films I saw equal 2.64

Overall it was a real mix bag of some quality flicks and some real stinkers.

    Best Movie: Mission Impossible 3

Once again Tom Cruise delivers. You can’t deny the fact his movies are virtually locks to gross 100+ million at the box office. The action was top notch as well as the acting. Keri Russell and Philip Seymour Hoffman really stood out. The ending had me on the edge of my seat.

    Worst Movie: Miami Vice

Who knew Michael Mann could make a terrible film. This film was a complete mess from start to finish. Foxx and Farrell just mailed it in. The action sequences were un-inspiring. This film isn’t even worth watching for free. One of the ten worst films I’ve seen in my life.

Biggest Box Office Bust: Snakes On A Plane

An extremely disappointing opening weekend and then it only made 6.4 million this past weekend. This film had more than a years worth of hype behind it. The main problem is that the film is Rated R in the US but the target audience is teenagers. That’s a bad combination. Frankly I don’t even understand why the film was Rated R. Their was barely any nudity and swearing. The Americans have a really wacko movie classification system. Snakes On A Plane is rated 14A here.

Out of all the films I saw, the only person I see being nominated for an Oscar is Meryl Streep for her performance as a vicious boss in The Devil Wears Prada.

The Director that had his stock drop the most was Manoj Knight Shyamalan. A lot of people have been unhappy with his last 3 films. Making one brilliant movie can only take you so far.

It felt like there were less sequels compared to the past couple summer movie seasons.

There are still a lot of movies from this summer that I want to see, although not in the threatre. I’ll check these out on DVD:

    1. The Break Up
    2. You, Me and Dupree
    3. The Lake House
    4. Little Miss Sunshine
    5. The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift
    6. Accepted
    7. Clerks 2
    8. Little Man
    9. Trust The Man
    10. Beerfest

As for the 2007 Summer Movies, this is my current Top 5:

    1. Spiderman 3
    2. Rush Hour 3
    3. The Bourne Ultimatum
    4. Knocked Up
    5. Live Free or Die Hard

Re: Final Thoughts On The 2006 Summer Movie Season

My favorites of the summer were definitely Superman Returns and MI:3. I loved both of those movies. I didn't like Pirates 2 hardly at all and I thought Click was just OK. I liked X-Men 3 pretty good too this summer, it just had the first two of the franchise to stand up to.

I've been quite busy this summer and didn't get a chance to see all the movies I wanted to, so I'm looking forward to catching You Me & Dupree, The Break Up, and Over the Hedge on DVD.

I'm hoping I get to the theater and see Ricky Bobby and Little Miss Sunshine before they leave.

For next summer, the Bourne movie is at the top of my must see list.

    Atlanta Braves
    - Auburn Tigers - Nashville Predators

lets see... I really like POTC 2, hated Miami Vice with a passion, thought Ricky Bobby was just OK, and wasn't really blown away by anything else this summer...

      Next summer though...

      Spiderman 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Working at a theatre I get to see a lot more movies in theatres than I have in the past. There were some good movies that I have seen, but a lot of crap movies. Here's how I'd rate the movies I remember seeing from the summer:

        Little Miss Sunshine: 9
        Superman Returns: 8
        A Prairie Home Companion: 8
        The Da Vinci Code: 8
        Over the Hedge: 7
        Click: 7
        Cars: 7
        X3: 6
        Miami Vice: 6
        Clerks 2: 6
        MI:3: 6
        Night Listener: 6
        Pirates 2: 6
        The Break-Up: 6
        Barnyard: 4
        Nacho Libre: 4
        You, Me, and Dupree: 3
        John Tucker Must Die: 3

Re: Final Thoughts On The 2006 Summer Movie Season

I enjoyed this summers crop of movies. Superman Returns was by far my favorite, and one of MY personal favorite movies of all time. It exceeded my expectations by a mile.

Other movies I saw and enjoyed were Pirates 2, X-Men, Da Vinci Code, Ricky Bobby, You Me and Dupree, and The Break Up. Some I enjoyed more than others (Pirates, X-Men, Ricky Bobby), but overall I enjoyed every movie I saw this summer.

Movie of 2006 (so far): LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE. It's a darn shame if you haven't seen that film yet.

Ricky Bobby, the only movie I saw this summer, gets an A.

I thought Ricky Bobby was terrible and probably the worst movie I saw this summer. I knew Miami Vice was gonna be garbage so I didn't go but did enjoy the super hero movies and POTC3. The biggest surprise is how awesome Snakes on a Plane is. Overall it's been a solid summer.

My biggest disappointment of the summer was You, Me & Dupree. If I remember correctly, I laughed maybe 5 times the entire movie, and that was at actions, not the lines.

The best movie I saw over the summer was Clerks 2. I never stopped laughing through the entire thing. At some points I even cried it was so funny.

All the movies you're looking forward to next year are sequels. Right there shows you why I don't waste money at the movies.

There is nothing wrong with a sequel unless it is quickly thrown together and not at all connected to the original. Just because a movie is a sequel doesn't mean that it's automatically bad or that there is nothing original about it.

Thank you for the all or nothing logic. Sure there are a few that are decent. However most of them suck, and most of them do NOT have much original to them.

It's your money, if sequels work for you, then spend away. Just not worth it for me.

I'll have to check that one out because this has been one of the worst summer movie seasons I can remember although I have not watched every movie.
                              Superman Returns-Super Dull-agonizingly slow paced-D
Pirates Of The Caribean 2 (or whatever)-The last few minutes not half bad, but most of the movie was ALL bad-D
The Break Up-poorly written-video game scenes were priceless though-C
The Da Vinci Code-would have meant more if I thought any of this movie's hypotheses had any validity-D-
MI3-still not as good as the first, and both the "Bournes" blow it away. C
Click-imaginative concept, unimaginative execution of the concept, but I liked C.Walken's character-C+
