Re: Top 10 British Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Bands?...

I hate to be anal, but Thin Lizzy was actually from Ireland, well Phil Lynot was and he formed the band in Ireland originally as just a 3-piece. And then later he added a guitarist from California Brian Robertson and a guitarist from Sweden Scott Gorham. Thin Lizzy is one of the most underrated bands of all time.

    For me it'd be:

    1. Cream the first metal band
    2. Led Zeppelin
    3. Deep Purple Mach II
    4. Black Sabbath
    5. Free (another truly underrated band)

Ya. I forgot about The Sex Pistols. Doh! Another band I forgot about was Rainbow. But I'm not sure if they were British or not. Have to look it up.

            Vic:

My problem with Rainbow is that it was derivative of Deep Purple since its guitarist was Deep Purple legend Ritchie Blackmore. So I don't think Rainbow was that influential. It was more of a legacy of Deep Purple.

Glad someone else recognizes the impact of the Pistols. Every punk band that followed, including all of the pop-punk bands of today such as Green Day, Foo Fighters and Blink 182, owe a HUGE debt to the Sex Pistols.

Yeah I agree, Rainbow was just a knock off of Deep Purple. Blackmore is awesome and Deep Purple and Rainbow are one of my favorite bands still, but Blackmore is into some real weird stuff lol. I just don't get it. Oh well, I can't get into Led, but as a get older I start liking it more and more. Maiden is still better to me lol.

I've been to more than 50 concerts in the last 25 years, and The Who still is the loudest show I've ever seen. Louder than The Clash, louder than Metallica, louder than Soundgarden, louder than Rush, louder than U2.

So yes, The Who definitely is a hard-rocking band. The most incredible power and raw emotion of any show I've seen.

The Who belong on the list somewhere......but certainly NOT before Zep. That is just blasphemy!
Judas Priest could flat out bring it.

Motorhead is one of my favorite. But as I get older I am starting to like Led! lol But someone else mention it too. About GreenDay, Billie loved the Ramones and the Sex pistol. I remember him playing those songs every day in the band room in High School! I think that the Who should be high on the list. But I don't think you can go by how loud a concert is to judge if they are hard rock! I went to the Rick Springfield concert lol at the State Fair and it was a loud as any concert I have been too! lol. Priest just kick *** plain and simple. I remember thinking why did the lead singer have short hair lol. But that guy could wale with the best of them.

Sabbath is definently not a one trick pony.

Have you listened to any songs other than "Iron Man," because it sure doesn't look like it.

Queen and The Who just aren't hard rock/heavy metal to me. The style of their music strikes me as straight up rock, or "classic" rock, if you will (to be simple, some of Queen's stuff if we want to get into it is pretty hard to classify). Much in the same way as a I wouldn't put Aerosmith into this grouping either (yes I know we're talking about British bands primarily). Yeah some of their songs are borderline hard rock, but the majority of their material is not (especially when one includes any of their stuff post 1980).

I agree that Rainbow is pretty much a knock-off of Deep Purple, though I'd rather listen to Rainbow any day of the week-long live Ronnie James Dio!

                                1. Black Sabbath
                                2. Led Zeppelin
