Re: Apple Press Conference (New iPods Announced)
NOTE: In thae post below, I am not addressing anyone in particular, but using "you" in the general, non-specific sense, like an open letter.
Apple offers the ipod recycling program, which gives you 10% off a new iPod when you trade in an old one. Thats only so they can dispose of the batteries in an environmentally-safe manner.
Why should they give any more? I always laugh when people suggest that companies should offer trade-in programs. What they hell would they do with old, busted, undoubtedly scratched-up ipods? They can't use the parts, there isn't a big market out there for old iPods(obviously, everyone wants the new one). So why would they do it?
I laugh even harder when people try to "scam" ways to get the new iPod. One rule in tech is that there is ALWAYS something new coming out. If someone was smart, they would realize that it had been 11 months since the iPods had seen an update. The writing was on the wall. When you bought yours, was is not deemed of value to you for the price paid AT THAT MOMENT? How has that changed? Like what, since you bought an iPod, you're entitled to updates in perpetuity? Yeah, damn Apple, coming out with updates/improvements to their products. I forgot, they should stop coming out with new things as soon as you buy your model, that way you can always have the newest thing. If anything, sell the iPod on ebay, take the loss, and put that money toward a new one. If you were smart, you put it in a nice case and kept it in excellent condition, to protect resale value.
P.S. This is not addressed to anyone personally or to make accusations, but I hope anyone(in the general population, not just OS) trying to "scam" a new iPod through warranty manipulation, etc. gets the door slammed shut in their face. It is people who try things like this that make it worse for the rest of us, because companies have to tighten their return/warranty policies(best buy, I'm looking at you) to make up all the lost cost from people who abuse it. Then when people with legitimate problems with their product(and no, trying to "upgrade" is not legitimate) try to get help, they are given the 3rd degree and not many options.
As a public service, I will post a link to an Apple Buyers guide, that shows when updates are released, and uses historical data to "predict" when new products will be released in the future. The iPod is on the list. On average, it is updated every 162 days. The time between the last update and the one just released on tuesday was about 330 days. Everybody knew it was coming soon.
This page provides a product summary for each Apple model. The intent is to provide our best recommendations regarding current product cycles, and to provide a summary of currently available rumors for each model. This page is based on rumors and speculation and we provide no guarantee to its accuracy.
All potential ipod buyers, use it!I drive a 2005 Toyota Prius Gas/Electric Hybrid. My last tank was 53.6 miles/gallon. Gas prices fear me!

Re: Apple Press Conference (New iPods Announced)
I should be able to get enough to cover the cost of the 80 GB iPod, and maybe then some, especially since my Creative is in pristine shape. It hardly ever leaves my desk.
Take care,

Silverstring is absolutely right. Buying any MP3 player is just like buying a computer: Face the fact that your high-zoot, high-tech toy will be trumped by something even more high zoot and high-tech within a year or less.
No industry is moving faster than tech.
Nice post, Silver.

Re: Apple Press Conference (New iPods Announced)
Exactly what I was thinking. Do you know how much someone would have to pay to get the 6,500 songs on my Creative at iTunes? About $6,500 or around $5,000 if they bought the tunes as albums.

And current count is 10,777 songs -- but I've got about ten to fifteen albums in my download folder that I need to add.Comment

The bad thing about that is... most of my iPod is filled with TV shows rather than music.Originally posted by EWRMETSMaybe the best post in OS's history. If you don't think Tony Romo is a Hall of Famer, you support al Qaeda.Comment

Re: Apple Press Conference (New iPods Announced)
Good lord I thought nobody had more music than me.
I have about 23GB's of music on my laptop right now, and still a ton of CD's to convert. I know I don't have over 10,000 songs though.
I don't even want to think how much money you spent on music to get over 10,000 songs.Comment

Re: Apple Press Conference (New iPods Announced)
I downloaded the updated version and I have to say that it looks great. However, I liked the previous one better because I could organize easier and didn't have to wait for so long when it updated. Maybe I'm a little impatient right now. I do like the new download screen where you can pause one download to finish up another one. It reminds me of Opera's download manager which I think is so superiot to any other browser. Color looks nice and all. I wonder how many games they'll have in the itunes store. Thought about trying to pick up one but hell, might as well put it towards my 360 right? I'm definitely going to have to get use to this new interface.Comment
