Upgrade Help: Home Theater vs. Game Consoles

I would like to solicit some advice from my fellow forumites, so bear with me.

I currently have a 50" 1080p Sony SXRD, a Sony Dream 5.1 home theater system w/ upconverting DVD (DAV-FX80), a 360, current gen consoles, and games.

I'm looking to upgrade my home theater system to the Onkyo 7.1 THX system, which would then require a DVD player purchase, either the Oppo or the Toshiba HD-A1. In order to do this, I need to of course, convince the wife. The breakdown looks like this:

    1) Onkyo HT-S990THX, Oppo or HD-A1

    OR

2)PS3 and/or Wii at launch, with a smattering of games

We do watch several shows (LOST, Housewives, Grey's, Office, Earl) and we try and watch a movie or two together each week. The HD-A1 has me interested since some great big budget HD-DVD's will be out by the end of the year (Batman Begins and King Kong, for starters). There are also a lot of games coming out for 360 that will occupy my gaming this fall/winter.

Of course this means our budget won't fit for a PS3 or Wii. The PS3 I "think" I can live without...initially, since the launch lineup is lackluster so far and the games I really want (FFXIII and MGS4) are at least a year away. The Wii however, is very tempting at launch. I'll pick up Zelda regardless, but the Wii features are quite intriguing, as is the simple "pick up and play" aspect of the Wii-mote for games like 'Wii Sports'. I was also interested in 'Super Paper Mario' and IGN was reporting that it's moved to Wii.

What would you guys do? The only non-360 games I'm looking at are Zelda and FFXII, and I'll still be able to play them. My DS is also getting a lot of play. I'm just afraid that I'll be inexplicably drawn to the PS3 or Wii by the hype machine, much like I was with the 360 last fall. I know I SHOULD wait, but to me it's a big inner struggle

I would definitely go with the Onkyo receiver and one of the two dvd players, probably the HD-A1. A PS3 or the new Nintendo system (I refuse to call it by it's stupid name) would be nice, but with you having a 360 already, it isn't like you really need it, and everything will benefit so much more from getting the new receiver- your tv viewing and game playing will be much more enjoyable. Are you also planning on purchasing new speakers?

I would say the systems, but only because I could care less about HD DVD or 7.1 sound. So my advice probably isn't the best to take.

I would go with the home theatre system and or the HD/DVD setup. I don't have a surround sound system set up yet and am tempted since I have a nice TV. I was looking at a lower end Onkyo system. They seem popular.

The Onkyo system is a full home theater in a box. The first certified THX system, hence the premium price over the near identical Onkyo HT-S790.

I actually just read up on that. Seems like a sweet setup, might be too expensive for me at this time. Good luck and enjoy whatever you decide to purchase.

EDIT: A little off topic, but does surround really enhance your TV and video gaming experience that much? I imagine for viewing sports it would be awesome.

Surround sound helps/enhances gaming a lot in certain games (i.e. Ghost Recon, Call of Duty). The directional sound of the gunfire is pretty sweet.

The THX system has a "THX Game" sound mode, whatever the hell that means

Yes, but 5.1 is plenty IMO, there's no real need for 7.1. This is my opinion though.

I agree, I don't see the point for 7.1 in a house, but whatever floats your boat.

why not get the Onkyo receiver and then buy the 360 HD-DVD attatchment instead of a stand alone HD-DVD player? That would save you about $300 at least which you can use for a Wii.

This might be a stupid question, but are games, tv programs, and movies all in 5.1 surround? Does anything use 6.1 or 7.1 surround? Is 6.1 and 7.1 just louder and more powerful than 5.1?

A lot of network TV and cable tv programs are in 5.1 now.

Pretty much all games and HD tv is dolby digital 5.1 .............DVD's usually have multiple sound formats so you can choose.

Thanks for the answers guys. Now I have the itch to get a surround sound system.

From the early info about the add-on it won't allow the new audio formats (Dolby TrueHD and the DTS-HD) to be passed, since you need analog audio jacks...at least currently.

As for the 7.1 vs. 5.1, I read some huge, uber-detailed description over at AVS, but I do know that for DTS-ES sound you need a 6.1 setup to hear it as intended. This is a big deal for me since I have a few movies that I would love to hear in 6.1+. The 7.1 is also a misnomer, since the two rear surround channels actually act as a dual mono pair (and the speakers should be placed close together accordingly).
