Re: The Killers - Sam's Town

I'm late to The Killers' party, as I never heard "Hot Fuss" and heard "Sam's Town" for the first time tonight.

I sure hope "Hot Fuss" is better than "Sam's Town," which flat-out sucks.

This band is a joke wrapped into a cliche on this album, trying to be U2, Springsteen and Queen combined with its add-a-chord, make-an-arena-anthem sound. Plus the lead singer's falsetto is a joke, and lyrics like "burning up a highway, on the back of a hurricane" are beyond lame.

All I can say is that I'm glad I didn't pay for this album. It's pure trash. If this is cutting-edge, exciting rock, then I fear for the genre.

The Hold Steady's new album, "Boys and Girls in America," absolutely DESTROYS "Sam's Town" among recent American rock releases.

    Take care,
    PK

Ya, I think they tried to do to much. Know your role! I really dont like Flowers talking all this smack about how their latest CD is gonna essentially leapfrog them over U2 as the rock alpha dog. He did say this album is better than "Achtung Baby"....um...I would delete that comment!

You have to be sh*tting me. "Sam's Town" is like a Debbie Gibson album compared to "Achtung Baby."

It would be a disgrace to the dust jacket of "Achtung Baby" to even slip "Sam's Town" into it, let alone compare the albums musically and lyrically.

He also said Thom Yorke should go back to writing pop songs like "Creep". Radiohead hates that song and they will not play it again. The guy is truly an idiot, I also thought Hot Fuss was wayyyy overrated.

Yep. I "obtained" "Hot Fuss" after listening to "Sam's Town" and hating it, since I've read that both records are very different.

That's the truth, as "Hot Fuss" was definitely influenced more by 80s new wave and synth bands like The Cure, New Order and Duran Duran than "Sam's Town." The Killers try to go anthemic and heartland with "Sam's Town," and it's a cliched mess, in my opinion.

I didn't think much of "Hot Fuss," either, as it seemed to be a Duran Duran cover album with a few catchy ditties. But "Hot Fuss" and "Sam's Town" definitely are different, the common denominator between both for me that I think they're both very weak, very overrated records.

Re: The Killers - Sam's Town

I think it is funny to call them overrated when both of their albums have been met with very mixed reviews. Also I'm not sure who ever called the new album "cutting edge", somebody probably did, but I've read a few interviews with Flowers and he is eager to announce the debt the album holds to Springstein's music.

The singer is a bit of a prick, that is apparent, but the new album is very good, the best radio-rock album I've heard in a while. Hot Fuss is an okay album, it has a few good singles but the vast majority is pretty bad. Sam's Town is much more balanced, it isn't as catchy at first, but a song like "When You Were Young" will stick in your head for days if you listen to it enough. It doesn't break any new ground, but not every album has to in order to work. It is new ground for the band, but hardly for rock. They switched styles and pulled off the straight up arena-rock thing better than they did the faux-New Wave stuff they tried on their debut.

However, Flowers defintely writes horrible lyrics at times, that is for sure, with a few boardering on cringe-worthy.

Re: The Killers - Sam's Town

I've made a complete 180 on Sam's Town and actually love it right now lol. The only song I skip is Uncle Jonny. Bit of a disaster that one turned out to be.

But I think part of the thing that works for The Killers and makes them click for some people and not for others is the over-the-top/"cringe-worthy" lyrics.

Hot Fuss was really, all boilded down, an over-the-top Cure influenced, new wave, 80's style ripoff album that somehow worked beautifully at times.

I kind of feel like they did the same thing with Sam's Town except with a different style.

Re: The Killers - Sam's Town

Both "Hot Fuss" and "Sam's Town" are overrated because neither are worthy of any positive reviews. Both are sh*t albums.

As for a song being good because it sticks in your head, "Take on Me" by A-ha will cling to your brain if you listen to it enough. That doesn't make it a good song.

The Killers have the one-two punch of musical death, in my opinion: VERY derivative music, bordering on being a cover band, and horrid lyrics.

Just not worth the time. My belief is that this band would be pretty irrelevant if Flowers ever kept his mouth shut. His over-the-top proclamations of grandeur -- a pretty good metaphor for "Sam's Town," by the way -- keep the hype level of the band pretty high. He's a deft huckster; I'll give him credit for that.

Hot Fuss received really good reviews, especially from the bigger magazines like Rolling Stone.
