Um, why is saying Dale Murphy "cliche?" For guys that grew up in the 70s and 80s loving the Braves, what's not to like about him? You do know what cliche means, right? I wouldn't say that Dale Murphy is the common or overused answer to this question unless someone was actually a Braves fan back then. If you asked 100 people this question, I doubt 2 or 3 guys would say Murphy.

Besides, either he's your favorite athlete or he's not. What does what everyone else says have to do with it? lol No offense, but your posts seem to always have this "I'm not going to agree with anyone else no matter what" tone to them.

That's exactly why I'm so tough on Chip. You always hold your favorites to completely different standards.

As for Marcus, he probably rounds out my top five. Plus, he gets bonus points for always being a super nice guy to me and having a great dog. Should be able to say the same about DeRo, but the week he moved to Texas was one of my first weeks at where I work -- he had a great dog, as well, but I never actually got to meet Mark. You have no idea how much that disappointed me.

For guys who actually witnessed his prime, nothing at all. However, unless you have actually lived through the period in question, saying that the Murph is your favorite player is very, very much an old and tired cliche. If you don't think the vast majority of Braves fans would say Murphy as their favorie player of all-time, regardless of when or how they actually became Braves fans, then you are being quite stubborn.

As the whole "he either is, or he isn't" argument, I point you to those in this thread who have posted more than one athlete, myself included. Sometimes it's hard to choose between more than one option. As for why Murph isn't my favorite, I think I already explained that in my first reply.

Well, growing up in Atlanta during his prime (and him being my favorite athlete has a lot more to do with him as person than it does him as an athlete anyway), I think I can say with certainty that him being my favorite athlete doesn't qualify as cliche. I just don't see how the word "cliche" and someone's favorite athlete go together anyway. Either someone is your favorite athlete or not. Cliche has nothing to do with it unless you're just talking about total bandwagon fans that don't know what they're talking about.

                    No big deal either way.
