    Other songs to consider:

"Man in the Box" -- Alice in Chains
"You Could Be Mine" -- Guns 'N Roses
    "Enter Sandman" -- Metallica
    "Buddy Holly" -- Weezer
    "Jeremy" -- Pearl Jam
    "Alive" -- Pearl Jam
    "Rooster" -- Alice in Chains
    "Mr. Jones" -- Counting Crows
    "Round Here" -- Counting Crows
    "Good" -- Better than Ezra
    "Champagne Supernova" -- Oasis
"Crash Into Me" -- Dave Matthews Band
    "Live Forever" -- Oasis
    "Creep" -- Radiohead
"All I Wanna Do" -- Sheryl Crow
    "Name" -- Goo Goo Dolls
    "Slide" -- Goo Goo Dolls
    "Selling the Drama" -- Live
"Out of the Picture" -- Son Volt (my vote for No. 1)
"Under the Bridge" -- Red Hot Chili Peppers
"Civil War" -- Guns 'N Roses
"Learning to Fly" -- Foo Fighters
"One of Us" -- Joan Osbourne
    "One Week" -- Barenaked Ladies
"One" -- U2 (my vote for No. 2)
    "Losing My Religion" -- R.E.M.
    "Free Fallin'" -- Tom Petty
"You Oughta Know" -- Alanis Morissette
    "No Rain" -- Blind Melon
    "I Alone" -- Live

You know the nineties continued after 95, right? And that music exists without guitars?

I'm just messin'. There is some great stuff on there, but aren't like half of them the same song, and the other half mid-tempo acoustic rock?

Still just messin'. It's just too easy...

      OK. Here's another one:

"Raincry," Scott Hardkiss and God Within

It's one of my absolute favorite progressive house tracks from the 90s, with not a single guitar in sight. I believe it was released in 1996, too.

So F U, you pretentious prick.

Even though it isn't on Use Your Illusion, I'd take "Patience" over almost ANY GNR song they ever made.

          Tough to top that one.
Personally I prefer Don't Look Back In Anger, both classics.

Just looking at those lists, I would say it was a weak decade.

I don't even know what music would appear for me in the 1990s but I gotta think there were more hits in the 70's and 80's that I would prefer to listen to. Maybe I'm just getting old.

              Cause hip-hop ruled it!!

And no one has mentioned a hip-hop song yet in this thread.

I knew you had it in you! Just need to prod you into indignation.

Re: Oasis, I'm partial to "Supersonic". One of the best BIG DUMB ROCK SONGS ever. I once had a conversation with Dave Grohl (just to name drop like the prick I am) where he said "Supersonic" was one song he wished he had written because it was "undeniably awesome."

I think of Grunge ruling the 90's. Those were my college years, and Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden were everywhere. NWA was over as was Run DMC, and Jazzy Z..err Jay Z hadnt quite really dropped yet.

You're leaving out the best era of hip hop, the '92-'95 NYC scene. Though only the more hardcore/older fans are into it.

Plus grunge only ruled the early 90's, there are 10 years to a decade!

I see some mentioned Tupac so I should mention a couple of his songs that I think deserve mention (if they're repeats of others choices I apologize)

"to live and die in LA"
                        "I aint mad atcha"
"Changes" (last tune might not count I think it was released after the 90s?)

Jay-Z's Reasonable Doubt dropped in 96. Before that was Tupac and Biggie, Tribe Called Quest's defining The Low End Theory, the aforementioned NY heyday ("Flava In Ya Ear" anyone?). In the R&B side was the whole New Jack rollover from 80s with Bell Biv Devoe, Blackstreet, the first Mary J. Blige album, then R. Kelly and the ubiquitous (at least in VA) 12 Play, Jodeci, TLC, and Janet Jackson's Janet. And not to forget the westcoast but a little album called The Chronic changed music as much as Nevermind.

Grunge really only had a few years - by the mid-nineties we had the pop-punk of Green Day and Sublime, and the rap-rock of Limp Bizket battling hip-hop on the charts, while "alternative" or "college rock" was going through Weezer and the birth of emo with Sunny Day Real Estate.

The nineties, whether we liked it or not, were defined by the emergence of a hip-hop nation that crossed racial and economic boundaries more than any other music.

That reminds me why I forgot the second half of the 90s when it came to mainstream rock. That, and the inexplicable emergence of the two worst bands of the last 20 years -- Creed and Nickelback.

                                Good topic...

                                1) John Mayer - "Comfortable"
                                2) Mike Garrigan - "Oceans"
                                3) Marvelous 3 - "I Just Wanna Go Home"
                                4) Collective Soul - "Needs"
                                5) David Ryan Harris - "If I Had A Dime"
                                6) Toad the Wet Sprocket - "Windmills"
                                7) Angie Aparo - "Wonderland"
                                8) Athenaeum - "Radiance"
                                9) Suburban Love Junkies - "Luv Cake"
                                10) Tabitha's Secret - "Forever December"

Hrm, I think I may have the answer as to what my next ten songs should be in my "what i'm listening to on." That's just a stellar list, if I must say so myself.
