    XM Satellite Radio

So, I've decided to dump free radio in my car and go with XM.

For those of you who have it, which receiver would you recommend if I want to solely use the service in my car? I've always been leery of using anything with an FM transmitter, as I've never had a good experience and always hear horror stories about lack of good reception. But, if I do go with one that has an FM transmitter, what kind of sound quality can I expect? Is it my best option?

Any help here would be appreciated.

I have the Delphi Skyfi2 and I have not had any problems with it. I will occasionally need to change the FM station from 88.1 to 88.5 to clear it up when I drive around Milwaukee and Chicago, but around home and back and forth to work it works like a dream. Sound quality is pretty good IMO. I think alot of the FM transmitters depend on your surrounding area if you have lots of stations. I would recommend the one I have.

I've asked my wife to get one of these for Christmas. I drive 2 hours every day for work so it would be well used.
I can't wait to get all the sports channels (especially NHL) and the comedy networks.

Likewise, thus my creating this thread. While my commute isn't nearly as bad -- a mere 45 or so minutes -- listening to the local radio stations just makes my ears bleed.

Thanks for the reply, huffphil. The SkyFi2 is the one I've been focusing on, by the way.

          Anyone else have any input?

What sort of car do you drive? I have a SkyFi2 in my Wrangler and it makes me wish I went with an in-dash unit.

A '99 Civic, which still has the stock stereo. So, obviously, In-dash units are something I've also considered, if anyone has information on those, as well, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Checkout Best Buy, they've had some sweet deals lately on dash units. Be careful where they mount the SkyFi, they mounted on the top of the dash on my Wrangler and I have frequent problems with the wires getting pinched, and when the heat is on it really messes up the connection. I would recommend XM, but I would strongly recommend the in-dash unit over the SkyFi.

Anyone have a satellite-ready CD receiver they want to recommend? The Alpine CDA-9856 looks to be the preferred unit on both Crutchfield and XMfan, anyone have any experience with it?

I have the SKYfi2 in my car and love it. I use the tape deck so I don't have to change the FM Frequency.

I would suggest the Inno. The ability to record indivdual songs, play MP3s and listen on the go is fantastic. The Skyfi2 is nice, but you'll find that it's a bit limiting.

                              So, I've made my decision.

It's gonna be the Alpine CDA-9856 with the XM Direct Satellite Radio Package and Full Speed Connection Cable for iPod.
