DVE-HD?

Which is the Toshiba player that doesn't do 1080P? Is that the A2 or A20? One of them doesn't.

DVE = Digital Video Essentials, the infamous calibration disc. There's a new HD-DVD combo disc version out, which I'll need since as far as I know, no HD-DVD movies have test patterns.

The A20 has the 1080p output which is key. Did a lot of reading and I guess the upconversion on the A20 is almost as good as the XA2...and cheaper is always better!

Ahh, I have the original DVE, but it's being re-released on HD-DVD and Blu-ray

Now I just read Michael Bay has decided he doesn't want to do Transformers 2 b/c of Paramount's decision. He wants people to see his films "on the best possible format." Posted this on his own forum:

I really want to make the leap to a next gen DVD player, but I'm too concerned with which format is going to win. I don't want to purchase a player and then have it obsolete within a year (ie: betamax and many other formats).

I just wish one format would win out and then go from there!

You're the exact reason sales are so low. People are going to continue to sit on the fence until they know for sure their hardware won't become obsolete sooner rather than later.

I don't blame you. Hi-Def movies look great but DVD's still look fine.

Microsoft thanks you for continuing to sit confused on the sidelines while they extend the format war for the next 18 months, during which time they will offer cheaper-than-disc digital downloads of high definition movies and TV shows via Xbox Live, while undercutting the very HD-DVD format they're claiming to support.

LOL. Whatever. Bay will do Transformers 2 because they will pay him millions to do it. He isnt going to turn down tens of millions of dollars because of Bluray.

I dont think the "war" as serious as people are trying to portray it. People are staying away more because of the price and necessity of these things than the format war. The cheapest standalone HD player is 299 and thats much more than the average household is willing to pay for a better picture and better sound (especially when you need a HDTV and a home theatre to fully enjoy it). Also only 17% of US households even have HDTV's. People are happy w/ DVDs and the only advantages that HDDVDs or Bluray's have are things that only videophiles and audiophiles like us care about.

I went ahead and bought an HD-DVD add on because I could get it for a little over 100 bucks. Also because even if i buy a ton of HD-DVD's now and Bluray wins the war, I can always just keep my addon or just buy a combo player once it gets under 500 bucks.

I see that long list of Paramount movies and I see one of my most requested HD movies. Saving Private Ryan

Levy further clarified the Paramount/DreamWorks press release, saying that "...his movies, like 'Saving Private Ryan' and 'War of the Worlds,' are not included in that deal. They are not exclusive to HD DVD, nor [are they] planned for that format at this time.'"

Exactly...I'm kinda hesitant to buy tons of movies at the current price. I still love my HD-DVD add on with Netflix, but I don't want to buy tons of movies and then find out i'll have to keep my 360 around forever to watch them
