    Re: Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread

I am having so much success with craigslist and such unloading SD-DVD's, I went ahead and went nuts on this deal. Placed 4 orders:

    casino
    terminator 3
    the mummy

    gone in 60 seconds
    terminator 2
    total recall

    speed
    fifth element
    usual suspects

    backdraft
    fast furious
    40 year old virgin

    unforgiven
    crank
    last samurai

Eternal Sunshine was the odd one out. I know the transfer is much better than 40 Year Old, but I watch 40 Year Old more and the SD-DVD of 40 Year Old is pretty weak.

Just did this deal. Have a PS3, but for 188 (opened Amazon credit card), I got the HD-A2 plus 8 movies. For that price, going format neutral wasn't too hard a thing to do. Of course, the five free movie offer from Toshiba doesn't have the greatest selection of movies, but there is always ebay....

Venturer to Release Budget HD DVD Player for the Holidays

With Toshiba's HD-A2 retailing at under $250, and the Xbox 360 Add-on at under $179, it's a good bet that the Venturer player might break below the $150 mark.

Universal Unleashes 'Tremors' on HD DVD

Though only a minor hit at the box office during its initial 1990 theatrical run, 'Tremors' has since gone on to spawn a cottage industry of direct-to-video sequels, and the original remains one of the most beloved sleepers of its era.

Universal will bow the film on HD DVD on November 20, presenting the film in 1080p/VC-1 video and offering both Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Digital-Plus 5.1 surround tracks.

If I missed it I apologize, but has anyone got any feedback on the picture quality of Heroes that came out today? Im definently picking it up on Friday but would feel a lot better about spending the 65.00-70.00 on it if I heard it looked fantastic.

The country's largest online retailer has unveiled a series of new deals that seem designed to engage both currrent and would-be early adopters.

Unprecedented in its scope, the promotion includes five separate sales incentives for next-gen disc supporters. A summary of each of the deals follow below:

              Blu-ray Promotions

Three Blu-ray Discs for The Price of Two
Targeted at existing Blu-ray fans, this deal allows consumers to receive three discs for the price of two. Selection is limited to a pre-selected list of 105 titles that includes such best-sellers as '300,' 'Casino Royale' and the first two 'Pirates of the Caribbean' flicks. Complete Details.

Buy a PlayStation 3 and Get Eight Blu-ray Discs Free
Aimed at the gamer crowd, this deal combines the BDA's "Five Discs Free" promo with Amazon's own three disc bundle for a total of eight free discs with purchase of a new PlayStation 3. Complete Details.
Buy a Blu-ray player and Get Eight Blu-ray Discs Free
Similar to the PS3/Eight Disc Bundle deal above, this deal combines the BDA's "Five Discs Free" promo with Amazon's own three disc bundle for a total of eight free discs with purchase of Blu-ray players from Sony, Samsung or Panasonic. Complete Details.

              -->

              HD DVD Promotions

Three HD DVD Discs for The Price of Two
Mirroring the "three for two" Blu-ray deal, consumers can choose any three HD DVD discs for the price of two. Disc choice is limited to a pre-selected list of 55 discs, which includes such hits as '300,' 'The Departed,' and 'Happy Feet.' Complete Details.

Buy an Xbox 360 HD DVD Player and Get Eight HD DVD Discs Free
Targeted at existing Xbox 360 owners, this deal combines the free in-the-box copy of 'King Kong' with the HD DVD camp's "Five Free Discs" offer, plus two additional HD DVDs from Amazon. Complete Details.

Buy a Toshiba HD DVD Player and Get Eight HD DVD Discs Free Similar to the Xbox/Eight Disc Bundle deal above, this deal combines the HD DVD camp's "Five Discs Free" promo with Amazon's own three disc bundle for a total of eight free discs with purchase of any of Toshiba's second-gen HD DVD players. Complete Details.

Amazon hasn't said how long this overall promotion will last, although the text in the individual deals indicates that each is a limited time offer.

How do the PS3 and home theater receiver need to be hooked up in order to listen to uncompressed PCM on blu rays? Thanks.

HDMI to the receiver, the receiver must be a HDMI capable receiver, not just pass through.

Ok thanks. Yes, my receiver is HDMI capable. So wait I just need to connect the PS3 to the receiver via HDMI or would I need two HDMI cables(one from the ps3 to HDTV and one from ps3 to the receiver)? Is there even two HDMI inputs on the ps3? Sorry for my ignorance. I'm at work and just read through the posts where you stated that uncompressed PCM sounds amazing so I'm eager to check this out.

You would go HDMI from the PS3 to the receiver, then HDMI from the receiver to the TV. Also make sure you select HDMI audio in the audio option under settings. If you do auto, it'll select all the 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 PCM options.

You could just use the optical output for the best sound and use component or HDMI cables for the video couldn't you?

You can't get uncompressed audio over optical. You'll get just regular 5.1, which still sounds great.
