Not as bad as I thought, but still horrific business practices IMO. How they can sell thousand dollar players without the ability to update (when they damn well know there'll be updates) is just wrong. I doubt PIP is that crucial, but still, if you buy a blu-ray player you should get EVERYTHING! I own a 360, I expect to be able to fully play games that come out for it, not be missing features.

Thanks Joe, I always look forward to the pics.

For those that want an A3, try and hold off about another week. There is a big rumor going around that Walmart, Best Buy, and CC might be having another fire sale by next week.

It looks like 12/7 is the date for the "walmart secret sale", It's for 5 movies instantly free from Wal-Mart's shelf, plus 2 in the box, plus 5 mail-in's. So 12 free in all.

        ----------------------------

I just returned from my closest Wally's after a little Christmas shopping and took my usual lap through the electronics section. Here's some things I noticed:

        1. They had the HD-DVD disc's located next to the the audio karaoke CD's, ACROSS from the DVD aisle!
        2. They had the Blu-Ray discs locked up in the case in a section below the PS2 discs. That wasn't a typo, the PS3 doesn't have enough games to get it's own case and shares a case with DS titles. The Blu's were along the bottom 2 rows of the PS2 case, 12 titles in stock.
        3. For Players, none were hooked up to sets but both a Sony BR and Toshiba A-2 had an aisle display. No literature whatsoever on either outside of the index card at the front of the shelf.
        4. What I found most interesting is that the card in front of the A2 had actually listed the Toshiba A3. I looked for the youngest kid working in the Dept. as the old lady working the register probably wouldn't have had a clue and inquired as to why. He said since selling out of the A2 that had not since received any more shipments. The kid knew his stuff and mentioned they did receive "a ton" of A3 units. When I asked why there was none on display and none on the shelves, he answered to my surprise that the pallets are plastered with "Do Not Sell" signs on the stretch wrap. He had no information as to why or when they would be sold.

reports of CC and BB receiving pallets of HD players with similar communication. Looks like next weekend will be another big HD sale.

            [Review Roundup]

            Superbad

'Superbad' is a very funny movie with plenty of repeat viewing potential. The Blu-ray looks and sounds great, and has a lot of bonus features, many of which are entertaining even if they don't offer too much substance. This is an easy recommendation.
            Anchorman

Depending on your opinion of Will Ferrell, 'Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy' will either make you bust a gut or shake your head in disbelief. Either way, this HD DVD is decent upgrade of the previously released 'Unrated' DVD, but nothing more. The video and audio are both solid but unexceptional, and the extras are often funny but far from illuminating. All things considered, this one's definitely worth a look, but some may want to give this one a rent before making a final purchase decision.
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End' could never recapture the freshness of 'Curse of the Black Pearl,' but it's far better than the chaotic 'Dead Man's Chest,' and as a trilogy-capper, it's more than satisfying. This Blu-ray release also holds its own with the rest of the trilogy. Although there aren't quite as many extras crammed onto this two-disc set as the previous 'Pirates' movies, the video is quite good, while the audio is simply fantastic. All things considered, Disney is pretty much three for three with the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' saga on Blu-ray, so if you already own the first two in the series, don't hesitate to pick up 'At World's End.' (If you don't already own the first two, what are you waiting for?)
            Old School

'Old School' is a gleefully tasteless collegiate comedy in the tradition of 'Animal House.' Though I didn't think it scaled quite the same sublime comedic heights of its '70s precursor, I did laugh louder and longer than I have for any other movie in recent memory. This HD DVD release from DreamWorks is also a winner, with a surprisingly strong transfer and a nice batch of extras as humorous as the film itself. The only real disappointment here is a Dolby Digital surround track that just doesn't cut it. Otherwise, 'Old School' easily makes the grade on high-def.

Perhaps in an attempt to differentiate itself from Blu-ray, HD DVD tech wizards will launch the HD DVD version of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix with a new feature called “community screening.” The movie takes advantage of the fact that all HD DVD players are equipped with an Ethernet hookup (unlike Blu-ray, […]
