How come everyone says there HD-DVd players are usless now? I was able to get a used toshiba one with 5 movies that i love for a great price off ebay. I will be happy to buy hd-dvd's at discounted/liquidated prices and when I go the blu-ray route, aweesome. I have a 42 inch 1080I so jumping to blu-ray now wont be a full benefit for me anyways. So, basically the player i am buying will be an upconvert for me and a decent HD picture until i buy a new tv/ps3.

am I an idiot and miss that these hd-dvd players will magically break or dissapear? lol

WITH THAT SAID...WHERE DO I GO TO FIND GOOD DEALS ON HD-DVD.

You may have missed the ship, my friend. Less than a hour after WB's decision hit the fan people on www.hidefdigest.com went crazy. HDDVDs were selling at $8-15, including new releases. Some guy was trading his at a 2:1 rate to get some Blu rays. People have come back to their senses and the prices have steadily gone back up to before the WB announcement.

I got about 10 movies I've really wanted for about $75.

they won't break or dissapear but you will be screwed if anything ever happens to your HD player. You will have all those movies with nothing to play it on. Waste of $$ to buy one now. With all the money you will be spending on the player and movies, you could buy a ps3.

I disagree with that. Worse case scenario: You buy a combo player if your HD player breaks down. Samsung is coming out with one at 500 bucks and Toshiba already has plans to develop one.

probably won't see anymore of those if there is one format. They developed those thinking both formats would survive.

Heel, like aholbert says I think that Combo players are the best route to take with this war no matter what happens. I'm thinking of selling my A3 and have sold my A2 last week to get a combo player. This way I will feel much less upset about this whole situation. I have 50+ HD-DVD's that trying to replace all those when and if they ever hit BD will be nearly a pain in the ***, so might as well just hold on to those versions. Their all Universal and Paramount titles.

yeah if you get one right now that will be fine. I think combo drives will go away soon though so if you get one now you will be fine. But for someone just looking to get into it, I think it's a bad decision to go out and start buying HD-dvd stuff now.

                          It's Confirmed:

New Line Details Transition to Blu-ray

Confirming earlier reports that it would follow Warner to Blu-ray exclusivity, New Line says its first HD DVD title ('Pan's Labryinth') will also be its last.

Though it was widely assumed that New Line (whose parent company is Time-Warner) would follow Warner Home Video's lead and continue to release on HD DVD through May 2008, a company rep tells us that New Line's move will go into immediate effect, with all of the studio's planned HD DVD releases now cancelled (including the HD DVD versions of current Blu-ray releases 'Hairspray' and 'Rush Hour 3,' which had previously been planned for HD DVD release sometime in early 2008).

As for 'Pan's Labryinth,' which hit stores late last year as the first (and only) New Line HD DVD release, the studio says that once current retail supplies are depleted, the title will be discontinued -- making it an instant collector's item.

New Line says it's not planning to issue an official press release trumpeting the move, ending its short-lived HD DVD support with a relative whimper.

The studio also tells us they won't be revealing any new Blu-ray titles at CES, though they do plan to continue to support the format throughout 2008 with a variety of new release and catalog titles to be announced in the future.

As always, we'll keep you posted...

Exactly, it's gonna take some time before the blu versions of previously exclusive HDDVDs come out. And there's no way a person even moderately invested in red can switch to blu without losing a lot in the process. The combo is the most cost effective way to "future proof" your investment.

i guess i understand what heelfan says about not buying into it now. BUT my point is that I DONT have a 1080P tv and dont plan on buying one for a while anyways so why not spend the $150 i did on the A3 and use it as an upconvert for my SD's and ill have a few Hd's to go with them in 1080i.

Oh yeah. If Paramount and Universal stick it out here in 2008 and release titles, it will be a good 2+ years before we see all of what Uni has released on HD-DVD. Paramount, I give them 6 months............knowing them their probably firing up the BD production labs right now for when they could jump. LOL!

That is up to you, HD-DVD's will most likely still be made into next year overseas so you can always still import titles.
