It does all of the audio codecs that the other cheaper players don't. Rocky's idea of the PS3 is a better choice.
yeah I hear ya rocky and candyman. Most likely I will be holding on to my HD DVD player until Blu-ray gets around $200.00 to $250.00.

HD DVD Not Dead, Toshiba Will Produce Dual Format HD Players

We snagged a second with Wolfgang Schlichting, IDC's research director for removable storage, to ask what the picture looks like for HD DVD. His thoughts? HD DVD isn't dead yet. Toshiba will probably produce dual format players (Blu-ray and HD DVD) and differentiate with HD DVD-only on the low-end. The key is for them to stay strong through the next year. One of the most insightful predictions we've heard about the format war since the Warner defection.

It will if people hold on to their HD DVD's and want to get rid of their stand alone players

Agreed. Can't imagine those 2 staying exclusive when almost all the money is on the other side. Safe bet is both to either go neutral or bolt for blu when their current contracts are up.

Eventually. But Peter Jackson is adamant about providing a crapload of supplemental material not previously offered on any DVD releases of the movies thus far, so he's going through millions and millions of feet of film in order to put together a really nice package of extras before he releases the trilogy in high-def.

Not sure how the Hobbit movies are going to affect this plan, however....

Paramount and Dreamworks continue to support HD DVD.
