Re: Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread
I love the HD-DVD format over BD, but if this means that we get one format and one format only out of this than I'm all for it.
Does it need to be more official than this?

Re: Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread
Toshiba's reaction to the Warner announcement:
TOKYO, Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Toshiba is quite surprised by Warner Bros.' decision to abandon HD DVD in favor of Blu-ray, despite the fact that there are various contracts in place between our companies concerning the support of HD DVD. As central members of the DVD Forum, we have long maintained a close partnership with Warner Bros. We worked closely together to help standardize the first-generation DVD format as well as to define and shape HD DVD as its next-generation successor.
We were particularly disappointed that this decision was made in spite of the significant momentum HD DVD has gained in the US market as well as other regions in 2007. HD DVD players and PCs have outsold Blu-ray in the US market in 2007.
We will assess the potential impact of this announcement with the other HD DVD partner companies and evaluate potential next steps. We remain firm in our belief that HD DVD is the format best suited to the wants and needs of the consumer.
Sounds like Warner's announcement caught Toshiba with their pants down.Comment

Re: Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread
I guess the week to week sales wasn't an enough of an indication. Also he should be including PS3 in his assessment of hardware sales which has one of the best blu-ray players available. For all the negativety Sony has had over the past year for including blu-ray it seems to have paid off. It is quite clearly that the PS3 is more than just a game machine and blu-ray as proven that.
I guess New Line and HBO Home Video are going Blu too:
"Warner will be joining other BD-exclusive suppliers Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Walt Disney Home Entertainment, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment and Lionsgate. Time Warner divisions New Line Home Entertainment and HBO Video are also included in the move to Blu-ray."Comment

This is great news for not only the blu camp, but those wanting the format war to end. A WB move to HD DVD would've guaranteed the "stalemate" many originally predicted.D E S E R V E_V I C T O R YR.I.P. Sean Taylor (1983-2007), a True CaneComment

Re: Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread
From a personal perspective, this doesnt affect me at all since I have both but this wont make me stop buying HD-DVDs. I'll continue to watch them on my 360 until the dual format standalones get under the $500 mark and then I'll just buy one of them.Comment

Bottom line - this is a net win for the industry and a short-term loss for anyone who is solely in the HD-DVD camp. And if Warner had announced a decision to only support HD-DVD, I'd be saying the same thing.Helen: Everyone's special, Dash.

Concur. But this does make me happy that whenever I've been given the option between HD-DVD or BD, I've always gone with the BD. Right now the only HD-DVDs I have are things I can't get on BD. Which, unfortunately, are a lot of titles.

Re: Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread
Rumor has it a lot of $$$$$ was involved. Also heard Toshiba had a deal on the table for Warner to go exclusive. Warner said they would if another studio would follow suit. Fox was approached & @ the last minute got COLD FEET. Deal falls thru. Warner goes BD Exclusive....Comment

Re: Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread
WB going BD exclusive is actually probably the best thing to happen. We know Sony itself is never going HD-DVD, so with only 2 studios not in the BD camp, this makes the future much easier.Comment
