Now don't get me wrong... I never said that the 360 was the ONLY thing HD-DVD's success was contingent upon... but IMHO it certainly was a big factor.

Had MS included the format, we'd still be seeing HD-DVD media. Of course, someone can point to the demise of UMD Movies to counter that but again, it's all IMO.

I know personally I would have adopted to HD-DVD as soon as I bought my 360.

EDIT: Wow, didn't realize that many 360 add-on's were sold. That's crazy. Imagine if all those owners bought at least 5 HD-DVD's... that's more along my point....

Got a question regarding the PS3 5 free Blu Ray titles rebate. It says that I must send in a copy of my receipt and the UPC barcode cut from the box. Well, I got the agreement plan from Best Buy. I'm just wondering, if or some reason I need to return my PS3 for a new one if something breaks, can I return it with no receipt and the UPC barcode cut from the box as long as I have my product agreement form? I'd really like to take advantage of this deal, as i'd really like POTC and Superman: The Movie on BR, especially for free.

Best Buy should be able to look up your info if you purchased it via Credit card. I'd contact them just to be sure.

Some very good points Pared. If MS had included the drive, I don't think we would be talking the death of HD DVD this morning.

Some very good points Pared. If MS had included the drive, I don't think we would be talking the death of HD DVD this morning.

One can argue that 360 wouldn't have sold as well because of a $100-200 price jump due to including the HD-DVD drive...I think saying "MS should have included the HD-DVD drive" is really discounting what made the 360 so popular so far, the inexpensive price point. Sure, the 360 including HD-DVD drives would have really helped the format, but it could have killed the 360 (along with the reliability issues).

Also, while Toshiba would have wanted that, Microsoft certainly did not. They never wanted to launch with the HD-DVD drive a part of the system because it would have jacked up costs big time.

Microsoft made the right decision then (360 was cheaper) and now (HD-DVD is dead). Sure they built a pretty unreliable system, but that doesn't make their marketing people idiots. They were completely spot on with their decision IMHO.

Microsoft didn't care too much about HD-DVD either- they didn't even make 1 TV commercial for HD-DVD! It was clear to me from Day 1 that digital distribution is the pony they're backing. Xbox Live is growing exponentially and Microsoft was building relationships with studios that produced Blu Ray movies while HD-DVD was around; look at the studios on Marketplace.

I'd bet you can get one for 60 or 70 bucks on Ebay right now.

I'm thinking of picking one up and keeping it in reserve in case my other 2 HD DVD players ever "conk out".

I 100% agree with you mgoblue. Microsoft did the right thing by not adding a HD DVD Drive to it's console. Another thing also is Microsoft launched 6 month's prior to HD DVD because HD DVD wasn't ready yet so for Microsoft to add HD DVD they would have had to delay Launch, which wasn't even an option on Microsoft's part. They knew to get a head start on SONY they would have to release without it.

What made the Add-On so popular among 360 user's was the price. Even @ entry it was the cheapest player on the market. Microsoft real only stake in HD DVD was HDi
