Re: Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread
Question concerning s-cables and possible issue with blue ray/hd-dvd.
I searched and couldnt' find anything about s-Cables on the forums.
And sorry for my ignorance, but what is an s-cable? I have a cheapo hi-def tv (720) and just got a progressive scan dvd player (can't really afford blu-ray). The guy at circuit city suggested a hdmi cable because of the dvd player which i already knew would need to be done. Problem is, my tv doesn't have an input for a hdmi cable but it does have one for an s-cable (so does the dvd player).
My question is, what is it and is it similar? I'm going to return the hdmi cable, should I return the player as well? What happens if I buy a blu ray? Will I even be able to hook it up?Comment

Re: Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread
You're of course right-the movies will still work. However, for whatever reason, a lot of people don't want to own something that is considered obsolete or dead technology.Comment

Re: Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread
Then you are mistaking what an "s-cable" is, and just don't understand what the different types of inputs are very well.
If you have an HD capable set, it will have at least 1 HDMI, DVI, or Component video input. I haven't heard of any HDTV set released in the last 2-3 years that didn't have at least 1 HDMI input.
What is the model number?Comment

Toshiba expected to announce death of HD DVD tomorrow, stop sales by March from Engadget.com
Despite Red's inability to make any real public statement, Japanese publication Nikkei has it that Toshiba president Atsutoshi Nishida will be announcing the final discontinuation of HD DVDdays from now). Apparently Toshiba will pull its units from retail shelves, but has no intention to give burned early adopters any refunds (no kidding?); it sounds like the ceasefire will include the bare PC drives as well, so those hoping to keep using HD DVD as a personal data storage medium probably won't have much luck. Apparently the announcement will come alongside Toshiba's plans to build new semiconductor fabs, which we're sure they'll try to spin as an advancement that far overshadows the hill of beans (read: hundreds of millions) they've lost in the format war.Comment

Oh yeah, picked up the Complete Matrix Trilogy at Circuit City $5 cheaper than Best Buy's Price because of the 110% price matching policy. $43 after taxes.Last edited by GAMEC0CK2002; 02-18-2008, 05:00 PM.Comment

Re: Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread
I bought the Mission Impossible series from Amazon during their sale last week and when I opened the packaging no discs. Not one disc in there, fired off an email to Amazon and they quickly put a new order in for me. Love their customer service but it's still really wierd to open a case and not find a disc in there, it's an odd feeling.Comment

That's kind of like the time I ordered a Big Mac and when I opened the box all that was in there was the bun.Comment

The Digital Bits is the Internet’s leading source for DVD, Blu-ray Disc, and 4K Ultra HD industry news, reviews, analysis, and expertise. Founded in 1997, it’s THE place for cinephiles to celebrate their love of film.
Japanese news site Nikkei.net has just announced that Toshiba's plan is to immediately stop manufacturing all HD-DVD products (both players and recorders), and to stop selling them at end of March. The official announcement will happen at the press conference set for 5 PM Tokyo time. We'll be back with Toshiba's official statement as soon as it comes in.
Thanks to Keiko S. for the translation and links. Stay tuned...
(LATE UPDATE - 2/18/08 - 3:30 PM PST)
Okay... things are moving very fast now. Industry sources are telling us that Toshiba has a press event scheduled for tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday 5 PM Tokyo time), at which they're expected to make the announcement that they're quitting the HD-DVD format. That's just 8 1/2 hours from now. Rumor is that hardware and software sales will be discontinued in early March, but we expect official details soon. We'll post more on this as it comes in.
Also, we haven't confirmed this with the studio yet, but it seems likely: Format War Central is reporting that a Technicolor insider has informed them that work has stopped on CBS and Paramount's Star Trek: The Original Series Remastered - Season Two HD-DVD release. They're saying that Toshiba was financing the production as part of an exclusive arrangement to have the title on HD-DVD only, and they've now pulled the plug.
We expect that Paramount and Universal may have official comments of their own as early as tomorrow morning.
In the meantime, be sure to check back with us this evening for Toshiba's official press release as soon as it hits the wires. Stay tuned...Comment

Re: Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread
Since they will cease production of the HD-DVD players, wonder if they will stop doing dual format players also. I have had a feeling all along that will be the case.My Fan Page http://theusualgamer.net/MyFanPage_Heelfan71.aspx

After WB, it became a matter of when, not if. I just thought Toshiba would tough it out a little longer than mid-Feb.Comment
