I'm with you on that one, would have been nice if this didn't drag out so long. It was nice that Toshiba had a firesale with their hd-dvd players in the fall, but they never followed up with BOGO's until December. By then it was too late it seems from the end result. Why they never did BOGO's every other week is beyond me to match Sony. Even worse, their marketing/advertising was just horrible...........Sony was pimping (no pun) their format while HD-DVD Group wasn't doing the same.

I look at the Toshiba HD-DVD players like my beloved SEGA Dreamcast, well before their time but met a quick death.

      Re: Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread

Toshiba really must have thought the key to victory was the price point of the players and not necessarily the movies themselves. In the end Toshiba should have attacked on both fronts, they seemed to have played this entire situation for a draw, they never seemed interested in delivering the death blow as much as they wanted to play it safe and let this thing drag on forever, unfortunatly for them Sony took the aggressive approach and it seems to have worked. I will admit though, I wont miss those horrible combo discs, they were terrible, the price was horrible and they always seemed to get scratched easier for some reason.

Almost forgot, the other nice selling point was the durability of the BR movies, I never worried that it would arrive scratched when ordering, or that I had to handle them with kid gloves, they were much more durable and I like that.

Yup, they both have had their positives and negatives in this war. Like you said, HD DVD group didn't go for the jugular during all this. If they did those BOGO's matching Sony title for title, this would be a different story today. Toshiba only played the game correctly on the hardware front which they are the best at.

I'm going to keep my A3,
          -its good for upconverting SD-DVD's
          -Universal/Paramount titles I already have
-pickup any exclusives that are left to release since it could be 1 or 2 years before some titles see the light of day on BluRay

Any titles that I have cross platform I'm going to get rid of and get the BD versions through BOGO's if there are anymore coming or ebay. With BD being the future I would prefer to move that route on multi-platform titles and BD exclusives. Plus I have kids and my wife isn't the most careful with DVD's, so the blue coating on the BD's will help with scratches.

Guess I'll be putting my HD DVD player with movies on Ebay....For me there just isn't a point to keep HD if I will get Blu-ray.

Ouch...HD-DVD group is canceling its CES press conference due to the Warner news...

Kinda tough to be positive at a time like this...will be interesting to hear what their reactions are....

The Paramount deal delayed the inevitable. This great for the high def format. I have about 30 HD-DVD but they are all Paramount/Universal. Everything that was dual was bought on Blu so that doesn't hurt too bad. Going to wait to see how long it will take for the Paramount/Universal conversion to Blu before I unload my player and HD-DVD movies.

I think HD DVD owners should hold tight on selling stuff.

There will probably be a lot of movies and players on eBay, and also retailer sales. So, theoretically, you can boost the holy hell out of your HD DVD collection these next few months.

Take advantage of the coming cheap prices, folks. You may lose money on the resell in the long run, but can get a lot of enjoyment out of the situation regardless.

IIRC, Sony presented blu-ray to the DVD Forum (people responsible for the eventual HD DVD) way back when. They denied them.

                        Re: Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread

This reminds me of the day when the Dreamcast died. PS2 killed it. Now the PS3 kills the HD-DVD format. I haven't invested too heavily to make the switch to blu and it was a fun ride on the red rollercoaster.
Microsoft covered their tails by not putting a HD-DVD drive in the 360. That was a bad sign from the get-go. Considering the full year headstart the 360 had, that one decision has probably led us to this day.

Toshiba went with making affordable players while Sony,et al. went with affordable movies (that were almost always on sale). I wonder if all the blu ray BOGOs will stop now, since the stranglehold on HD format will begin in May.

Hopefully some dirt cheap stuff in the near future...my 98 dollar A2 is still my best SD-DVD player as well (great upscaling).Gonna hold on to it.

Agreed. The firesale has already started in the B/S/T forums over at hidefdigest.com

I'll probably sell all my non-essential HDDVDs for as much as possible now. Then re-buy once the market hits rock bottom.

Wonder how long before Sony puts out the WB exclusive commercial?

I'm only selling most of my Warner titles on HD-DVD and eventually rebuying those when their bogo's on BluRay. I want to have all the Harry Potters on 1 format if possible.

With having over 70+ titles on HD-DVD, trying to dump this awesome format would be dumb imo.

Eventually combo players will come down in price and who knows, Toshiba might release their first combo player by 2009.

Personally I will not being offing any of my HD DVD Hardware or Software & will continue to buy Day & Date releases from the Red Team until they pack-it in.

As an early adopter, but more important an enthusiast these are the chances you take when competing formats hit the market.
