    Re: Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread

Every Blu Ray I've watched is letterboxed... why the hell would it be letterboxed if I have a 16:9 HDTV? I know this my be a stupid question but what the hell is the deal?

      2:35:1 will be letterboxed

1.85:1 will not on 16:9 screens.

      It's all how it's filmed.

Would love to hear some feedback on the Pirates movies, Ive read that they look good but would like to hear some other opinions also. With the amount of movies that came out today I cant afford to pick something up only to be let down, ie. I heard 40-Year Old Virgin was a dud on HD-DVD and the picture quality was sub par.

...waiting for my 'Pirates of the Caribbean' Blu-ray's to arrive from Amazon...

If they truly are reference quality (as the reviews echo), I think I'll finally convince my wife to allow a mass re-buy of our DVD collection for Blu-ray!

The HBO HD feed, even over compressed cable, looked marginal.

A good Blu-ray reference would be 'Kingdom of Heaven', along with 'The Prestige' (at least from what I've seen). Of course 'Planet Earth' on either format will look good, but it does have background noise and compression problems.

Definently agree, both Kingdom of Heaven and Prestige look outstanding, Crank is another one that looks killer as well, Ice Age looks really good also. Almost forgot, Casino Royale looks pretty good also.

EDIT- Open Season is another one that looks outstanding.

'Open Season' if I'm not mistaken used a new video codec, which allowed it too look MUCH better than competing material (even if the movie wasn't too hot).

You know what movie looks surprisingly great on blu-ray?

Donnie Brasco. Especially the outdoor shots in the city (late 70s Caddy's are underrated, BTW) and scenes in Florida.

Donnie Brasco does look amazing on BD.

I received The Matrix today on HD-DVD, hoping this weekend to be checking these out. Then I'm just waiting on 40 yr old virgin, Pirates 1 & 2 to arrive tomorrow........Amazon Prime is awesome.

June looks kinda expensive month also: Blood Diamond, Hellboy, Ghost Rider, Bruce Almighty, Dead Silence (maybe).

Just an FYI, buy.com has the pre-order up for Blood Diamond already and they had it at 18.99 as of yesterday, couple that with the 10.00 off for google checkout if you can still do that and you can get it for 8.99, cant beat that.

With the new FW 1.8, man BR has gotten even better with HDMI turned on to Full and Super White turned on, its absolutely looks stunning. I took a gander at Kingdom, Casino Royale and Pirates before and after very good looking film and hell the DVD double scale is pretty good also. The Matrix is an improvement LOTR is equally good looking its a scale below native res.
