Toshiba Offers $100 Rebate on New HD DVD Players
The HD DVD Promotions Group today announced that Toshiba will be offering a month-long $100 rebate on new HD DVD players, bringing the entry-level list price for a stand-alone HD DVD player to a record-low $299.
Beginning this Sunday (May 20th) and continuing until June 16th, consumers buying Toshiba's HD-A2 model player will receive an an instant, in-store rebate of $100. During the final week of the promotion (from June 10th through June 16th), Toshiba will extend the $100 rebate to any Toshiba HD DVD player, and will offer an additional $100 rebate to consumers purchasing both an HD DVD player and a 42 inch (or larger) Toshiba HDTV.
The HD DVD group says the rebate will be available across a wide range of retailers, including Best Buy, Circuit City, HHGregg and Amazon.com.
Consumers taking advantage of this Father's Day-timed rebate are also eligible to choose five free HD DVD titles (from a selection of fifteen), as part of a previously-announced promotion, which ends July 31, 2007.
This latest rebate offer comes in a particularly frenzied season for both HD DVD and Blu-ray, as both next-gen formats have bulked up their release slates leading into the summer.
The HD DVD group, which has slipped behind Blu-ray in overall disc sales since the start of 2007, has stepped up its marketing efforts in recent weeks, launching a national marketing and retail campaign anchored by the recent release of a theatrical trailer promoting the format, which has been spotted playing before such high profile titles as 'Spider-man 3.'Comment

John Woo's classic, Hard Boiled, coming to blu-ray..
..as part of the Collector's Edition of Stranglehold (PS3)
"The big news out of the event is that due to the extra space that Blu-ray affords, the Collector's Edition of Stranglehold on the PS3 will include Hard Boiled on the disc in full HD. Yes, you read that correctly - John Woo's classic action film starring the one and only Chow Yun Fat will be right there on the disc. We asked a Midway rep about sampling specifics, and while final compression and bit rate stats aren't available on the movie, we do know that it is being re-mastered in high-definition for the transfer. Additionally, it will contain both the original Cantonese language track as well as the English overdubs. If you've seen the movie both ways you know that it's a very different movie when viewed in English, so we're very happy to see both included."D E S E R V E_V I C T O R YR.I.P. Pirates reviews on Blu ray. Let's just say this, the week HD-DVD gets reference material in The Matrix, so does Blu ray. Can't wait to pop these bad boys in.

Re: Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread
You do realize these movies are filmed in specific aspect ratios, and meant to be presented in that way, right?
There are 1.85:1 aspect ratio movies out there such as Hulk, Corpse Bride, etc. (or at least they're close enough to 1.85:1 that with a little overscan you wouldn't know the difference at all).
I'm supposed to be getting the Ultimate Matrix Collection today, as mine has already been shipped by Warner Home Video. Looking forward to watching it. I just wish I had a blu-ray player as well so I could watch POTC 1&2 along with Casino Royale in HD.

Re: Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread
That's cool, I guess, but the only way to do that would be to buy movies that take up the whole screen. I certainly would hate to see a movie butchered just to fit that requirement. That's why I've been waiting for HD movies on disc format for so long. I gave up on watching HD movies on cable by and large, because of the frequency of cropped movies they broadcast. It's no fun watching LOTR, the Matrix trilogy, etc. in this way.
I personally prefer movies that are cinemascope to begin with, even on my screen.Comment
