HD-DVD Reaches 100,000 Hardware Units Sold in North America
Beats Blu-ray…if you don't count the PlayStation 3.

The North American HD-DVD Promotional Group announced today that the sales of dedicated HD-DVD playing hardware have surpassed the 100,000 units mark. This figure does not represent HD-DVD PC-drives or the Xbox 360 add-on drive. Weighted against dedicated Blu-ray hardware sales (that do not include the PlayStation 3), the HD-DVD camp now claims a larger hardware installation base and the honor of reaching the 100,000 unit mark first.

Looking forward, the HD-DVD camp expects Toshiba's recent price drops on HD-DVD players to bear fruit at retail. Now that the hardware has fallen below the $400 mark, retailers and consumers are expected to react well to a lower barrier of entry. Coupled with the release of major properties like The Complete Matrix Trilogy in May, the HD-DVD group is optimistic for future growth and adoption of the format.

From an editorial perspective, the fact that HD-DVD hardware has only recently broken the 100,000 unit mark in North America after almost a year of availability denotes a relatively lagging overall consumer adoption of the technology. The ongoing format war is obviously doing nothing to benefit consumer confidence or willingness to make a commitment to either Blu-ray or HD-DVD.

Comparing the 100,000 figure to the PlayStation 3 is also interesting. Exact numbers on PlayStation 3 sales in North America are hard to come by, but based upon some extrapolation it can be deduced that there are certainly more than a million PS3 units in homes. As such, Blu-ray's recent lead over HD-DVD in movie-title sales can be attributed in large part to the PS3. Many involved in the HD-DVD camp have discounted the impact the PS3 will have on the market, citing the fact that PS3 owners are likely to be far more interested in playing games, rather than movies, on the console. At the moment this seems not to be the case, but should Blu-ray movie sales fall into decline as the PS3's game library fills out, the HD-DVD camp may eventually be proven correct.

Stay tuned for the Blu-ray camp's obligatory counter-press release.

So, judging from that article, the main knock against high blu-ray penetration is, indeed, moot. PS3 owners do matter, and are supporting the format--which should've been obvious to even the most biased HD-DVD supporter.

Anyway..here's some more good news for HD-DVD

Let me preface this comment, I do have both HD and Blu-Ray so I dont really favor one over the other at this point, but those numbers about Planet Earth seem somewhat weighted when taking into account that there was a big movement to get HD-DVD backers to purchase on the same day to drive the #'s up to show support. I personally think it was a horrible idea, especially if everyone spent all their money on that day since the #'s will fall, and possibly lower then the #'s were prior to this supposed big day.

Well then that would be much more impressive, I figured it was more due to the one day push a lot of members at other forums were doing. Like I said, I have both formats so Im not really rooting for one, although the one thing I would love to see dropped is this constant combo thing, ie. Smokin Aces, Children of Men etc, these discs seem to be the ones that have the most problems and costs the most on top of that.

              WalMart to sell $199 HD-DVD player in Q4 2007?
Breaking news may have great impact on format war.

April 20, 2007 - In breaking news today, it would appear that mega-retailer WalMart has contracted a Chinese manufacturer to produce millions of low-cost HD-DVD players. Though somewhat obfuscated by translation issues and the breaking nature of the news, the current internet consensus suggests that Taiwan based manufacturer Fuh Yuan, in cooperation with TDK, will produce the blue laser drives for 2-million HD-DVD players. Broadcom will reportedly supply the system-on-a-chip decoder, and China Great Wall will handle final assembly. The deal represents around US $100,000,000, and it is reported that a new manufacturing plant has already been opened to fulfill the order.

Speculation suggests the players will arrive at retail in late 2007 and will be priced between $199-299. At such cost, WalMart's HD-DVD drives will be far below the current low of $399 for Toshiba's HD-A20 player, and will look cheap compared to the lowest priced Blu-ray hardware on the market today ($599).

If the current details of the plan prove to be true, WalMart's support of HD-DVD will have a significant impact on the next-gen DVD format war. The American retailer operates on a high-volume, low-margin business plan of market saturation, which is exactly the approach required to drive one format or the other to preeminence.

Blu-ray Disc Goes Over 1 Million Mark

The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) announced today that Blu-ray Disc has become the first high definition optical disc format to sell more than one million discs, a milestone it has achieved in less than a year.

"Sales of Blu-ray Disc titles have taken off since the first of the year," said Andy Parsons, Chairman of the Blu-ray Disc Association’s U.S. Promotion Committee and Senior Vice President New Product Development at Pioneer Electronics. "Blu-ray Discs have been outselling HD DVD by more than two to one since the beginning of the year and the gap is steadily widening. It’s exactly what we’ve said all along would happen - the strong support for Blu-ray among movie studio and equipment manufacturers means that consumers have more choices when it comes to players and titles. And they’re choosing Blu-ray by an ever-increasing margin."

I don't see how this should really mean anything for HD-DVD yet. 1 million is hardly penetrating the market. There's still plenty of time left in this format war, since millions of people aren't even looking into getting either yet.

I see this war going for 2-3 years before a clear winner, unless Universal decides to go format neutral or the cheap HD-DVD players hit the market at a lower price point.

                            HD-DVD Movie Sales Only 2k Behind Blu-ray
Most recent sales data shows formats almost neck and neck.

April 25, 2007 - The recent pres-release-bickering between the HD-DVD and Blu-ray camps isn't terribly new, though most previous spats have gone down in the midst of large trade shows. The most recent squabbling began when HD-DVD celebrated the format's birthday by announcing that 100,000 dedicated players had been sold, preserving the format's hardware lead, not counting the PlayStation 3 (story). Blu-ray fired back, announcing that Blu-ray movie sales had reached the 1,000,000-sold milestone, and added a little salt to the wound with the data that 70-percent of Q1 HD-movie sales were thanks to Blu-ray (story).

Today, HD-DVD's representatives from Webersh & Wick public relations wrote to IGN Gear directly with updated HD-DVD news. According to their figures, HD-DVD movie sales lag only 2,000 units behind Blu-ray with 998,059 units sold. The firm points out that pre-orders of Planet Earth and The Matrix Trilogy will propel HD-DVD over the million-mark quite shortly. Representatives also stated that hardware sales have continued with strength in April, maintaining a 4 to 1 margin over Blu-ray.

Though consumers would likely benefit to a resolution to this format war sooner rather than later, it's looking like the struggle may continue for quite some time. The upshot of it all, however, will be a long and amusing PR battle. Honestly, it's rare in technology to get this much back-and-forth in claims, counter claims, dueling sales statistics, and one sided announcements of victory, so kick back and enjoy it, maybe while rocking some undeniably pretty 1080p movies on the format of your choice.
