I love the LOTR trilogy. Great movies.

But, I wouldn't watch them for longer than 10 minutes if it's on television.

Star Wars trilogy is different. I'd sit and watch and by the time I know it the movie is over.

So, I'd go with Star Wars.

I don't know whats on Alan Dean's site, but Lucas wrote Star Wars as a spoof of old serial films. There are numerous interviews with him to prove this point (I viewed many of them in a philosophy class in college on the subject of religious themes in Star Wars). The original never had the words "Episode IV: A New Hope" in the title. It was supposed to mimic the old serials that tossed the viewer right into the action immediately. It wasn't until later that was added. Initially, there were no plans for sequels but the success of the first dictated that and he added the Episode titles. The first three episodes weren't written long ago and sealed away in some vault, they were written when the time came to cash in on the franchise once again.

I don't if you guys read the whole exchange before posting, but I was originally responding to this:

No question original star wars. I enjoyed LOTR, but will most likely never watch them again. Star wars is timeless, and will never be forgotten, but LOTR will. It didn t break any boundaries like star wars did, and was in essence a remake of something already done, albeit in a another media form.

I was asking basically asking (in addtion to offering counterpoints to his own) what he was considering the LOTR trilogy to be a remake of, since there was no LOTR trilogy before it. So I figured he must have been talking about the books, and if he was, I was letting him know that the star wars fiction predated the actual release of the movie, which it did. So in that regard, it was a moot point. However this whole topic has become moot as it's come down to people just naming off movies not related to the topic in order to get a laugh.

Yeah but it isn't the same deal. The LOTR books were around a long time before they said, "Hey, lets make some movies about these LOTR books." The author collaborated with Lucas on the Star Wars novel that just happened to come out in 1976, which was a year before the movie. I don't think it was the same situation where Lucas all of a sudden said, "Hey, lets make a movie about this book 'A New Hope.'" Know what I mean? If I'm totally misunderstanding what you are trying to point out, say so.

While I see what you are saying, that statement is wrong. The Star Wars novel that was published in 1976 was adapted from the screenplay written by George Lucas after the movie had started production. In this case, the movie came first, then the novel.

Agreed. I didn't care for 2 that much, I liked it, just not as much as 1. Loved the Parkman stuff. Three though...ugh..

Star Wars because it caught the imagination of the world, seems like you cant go anywhere with out some sort of Star wars image, product, quotable, around you. But I love LOTR
