    DirecTV Adding 100 HD Channels

January 9, 2007 - Satellite provider DirecTV at CES 2007 announced that it plans to launch 100 new HD-dedicated channels in the coming months to support what it has dubbed "the year of HD." The company will effectively be offering three times more HD programming than any other distributor by the third quarter of the year. And there are spectacular additions coming, as we'll list below.

Look out for HD-ized versions of major network channels, including A&E, National Geographic, Bravo, NFL Network, Cartoon Network, Food Network, TBS, FX, The History Channel, HGTV, The Weather Channel, USA Network, MTV, and our personal favorite, the SciFi Channel.

For more than a year, nerds like us have begged for DirecTV to carry the SciFi Channel in HD so that we can watch HD versions of Battlestar Galactica as soon as they debut. It seems that our prayers and cries for a response have finally been addressed. Thank you, DirecTV.

The provider will also extend its sports-based HD programming by offerings hundreds of new games from the Regional Sports Networks around the country. DirecTV will additionally serve up an expanded line of premium movie channels in high-definition.

"This is DIRECTV's break-out year for HD," said Chase Carey, president and CEO, DIRECTV, Inc. "The launch of our two new satellites will complete the largest capacity expansion in DIRECTV history, and no other video service will be able to match the sheer volume and quality of our HD programming. With HD adoption now reaching critical mass in the U.S., and 40 million homes projected to have HD-capable TV's this year, DIRECTV will be uniquely positioned as the best choice for HD programming."

The company has not yet revealed when HD versions of these channels will debut, but we'll keep you posted as more details become available.

wow, that's a lot of HD programming. Hopefully comcast will have a response to this or else I might be doing the ole switcheroo. And then I'll call DirecTV and complain that I can't afford them and I want to go back to Comcast and then i'll get a price reduction

What a fast change. With this new CEO, I had heard that new HD channels were getting pushed to the back burner so they could focus on DSL alternatives.

I really want NFL Network, TBS (directv installer stole my anttenna, DTV made up for it though, so I can't get it locally), FX, USA Network, SciFi. The other channels, who cares. With the weather channel, now I can see the hurricanes in HD.

The Back to the Future commercial for this is pretty funny.

I'm going to have to make a change. I've stuck with my local cable company, but with this news.....I gotta change.

It looks like I'll be going with DirecTV instead of Dish Network whenever I move into my new home in a couple of months. It also appears DirecTV is going to be the exclusive provider of MLB Extra Innings as well, if the current talks progress into a deal.

I've read things, I think, about DirecTV's HD signals not being very good or something, anyone have it? How is it compared to cable or Dish?

For anyone new to DTV or that doesn't know this, if you get NFL Sunday Ticket, they make you pay an extra $99 for Superfan to get the games in HD. I have never paid for it and I got it by calling and complaining that I already pay for HD and I'm paying for Sunday Ticket so I should get both.

Really? When did that happen, my cable company was advertising it the other night for 2007.

DirecTV's potential deal to become the exclusive provider of MLB Extra Innings could lead Congress to examine the sport's antitrust exemption, or lead you to find a spot on the roof for a satellite dish.

My uninformed guess would have the deal taking effect in 2008, it is too late for something to go exclusive now for MLB.

You cannot beat OTA signal with anything, unless you run a fiber line straight from the station to your house. Cable is probably going to have a better PQ as DTV compresses their data. This is better with the MPEG-4 satellites now though. The difference though is not going to be noticeable unless you are a PQ freak.

** Just make sure that you guys new to DTV get the MPEG-4 dish. The new HD channels will most likely not be available on the old MPEG-2 dish and plus you can get locals in HD with the MPEG-4 dish. **
