Re: DirecTV Adding 100 HD Channels

I know it cost $100 for the receiver and another $100 bucks for the new dish with DTV.

I know a friend who said forget that and jumped over to Time Warner Cable. We have DTV as well. Should be interesting.

In addition to the newer 5 lnb dish, an MPEG-4 capable HD receiver will also be needed, either the H20 (non DVR) or the HR20 (new MPEG-4 HD DVR).

that throws out the HD DVR (HR-250) that has Tivo. I just got the 5lnb installed and have a regular HDTV (no DVR) receiver downstairs but the main tv has a Directv HD DVR (HR-250) that is Tivo. However, I'm under the assumption that it won't work with the new HD channels they are rolling out. So I don't know what i"ll do.

I've had both and the HR-250 is way way way better than Directv's. It's not even funny. It's going to be a sad day if I ever have to make the switch.

Yeah I have 1 H20 and 1 HR-250. I just don't know if I want to pay $200-$400 to lease the HR20, maybe I can get them to give me on for free or greatly discounted when I move in a few months. Always good to play well Comcast will give it to me for free.

We're waiting on my damn gardeners to cut two huge *** trees blocking the satellite before our HD satellite and reciever get installed. My parents said if it costs too much to cut the trees down, that they'll wanna switch back to cable, but with this news....there ain't no way in hell we're going back.

If you call DirecTV's retention department, you may be able to get it for free or at least a reduced price. I got my HR20 for free from them, but that was back in September, and was technically a "swap-out" for my HR-250, even though they don't make you hand over the HR-250.

I have heard that with the HR20 being available in more markets now, they are less likely to give comps than they were when they first rolled out. You may still be able to, though. Worth a shot.

I would go Direct TV, but I have 2 HD DVR's, don't feel like shelling out $400 to have the exact same thing I have now.

EG, why don't you sell your current HD-DVRs on EBay and use that towards the new HD-DVRs? Or is that $400 after you sell your current ones?

Um, my cable company owns them, I don't think they'd like me selling them

Oh, I thought you owned them. I'm pretty sure you have to buy them from DirecTV and then after that, they're yours to do whatever with them.

Well, that exdtra $400 might be worth the 100 additional HD channels. If you guys can afford it, then go for it. There are bigger wastes of money out there.

Until DirecTV changes it's "Leasing Policy" I won't be returning.. After having them for 5 years, I switched to Cable. I was having major problems with the HD-20. Finally they admitted, it was a FIRMWARE problem, but couldn't tell me when it would be fixed, but yet they wanted me to spend $200.00 on an HD-DVR which I really wouldn't own, because I would need to return-it if I ever terminate service...

                            YEAH RIGHT....

directv's own dvrs that don't have tivo are a total joke. i had a regular dvr and then the hd dvr and both are nothign but problems. locking up, fast forwarding and reversing is a joke. when you experience tivo, it's tough changing. maybe by then, they'll have some things worked out.

I love my DtV. I will never, I repeat never go back to cable.

Can't wait for the increase in HD content.
