When my wife and I moved to Winston-Salem from Wilmington, we were Cingular customers, and our cellphones were our only phones. We do not have a land line. I'd even been a customer of theirs since the name changed from BellSouth Mobility DCS.

Come to find out, our apartment, which is well within Winston-Salem city limits and according to Cingular's coverage maps, right smack dab in the middle of a service area, had a Cingular dead spot. Our phones couldn't pick up any signal from any Cingular towers - but we had no idea because we were still getting service.

Fast forward a month - the bill arrives, and we're being charged out the ying-yang for roaming charges. I call Cingular to investigate. Apparently, because of the dead spot, our phones were pulling service off of a Verizon tower - which in turn was nailing us with roaming charges everytime we used our phones while at home.

Now, because according to a coverage map, we were right in the middle of a coverage area, I felt like Cingular should forgive us of the roaming charges and let us out of our contract so we could sign up with a provider we could actually use. Not so fast, my friend!

Not only did Cingular refuse to even come down some on the roaming charges, they also forced us to pay an early termination fee on the contract - even though I told them I loved their service and would love to become a customer again when I could actually use it! All this from a company I'd been a customer of since 1999.

No thanks. Cingular can stick their iPhone where the tower signals don't shine.
That story is unfortunate, but if you had the same issue with Verizon, Sprint or any other company they would have treated you the exact same way.

The phone looks amazing. The most I've ever paid for a phone is $50, I would have to think hard about paying that much for a phone. If it is as easy to use as an iPod as far as transferring songs and video, then I would be more interested. My current phone has some nice music playback featuers, but the only headphone jack is a special input that requires a $25 headphone set to play. Then you need a microSD to store songs($30+) PLUS the data transfer kit(another $25) because of course the phone doesn't use USB.

If Apple adds a normal headphone input, USB input and doesn't require the SD, the phone would be something I would consider as an expensive gift to myself at some point.

Seriously. I really don't understand getting this overpriced stuff just to have it.

If you have the money, I don't see the problem with buying nice things for yourself.

Even if you have the money it still doesn't seem worth it. Then again, I've never been a real big fan of how apple overprices its products.

I want one of those so bad but I can't freaking get around to saving up enough. Everytime I do, I freaking have to pay to enroll in school, or get the car fixed, or pay a speeding fine, or support my video game habit........

Oh, that apply joint looks nice but just doesn't do it for me. I have a black ipod already. I want a phone that will work the most seamless for me when I eventually get my own computer and stuff. Not to mention the fact that new phones will be rolling out with more power much sooner than thought to work well with Windows Vista.......

                    Re: Apple Introduces iPhone

I agree its expensive. However, it actually is a pretty good value for what you get compared to other "similar" products like the smartphone on the market.

For example, to get a treo with sprint, the retail price is $399 with 2 years and a few months ago it was $499 with Verizon. Neither does as much as the iphone.

So, even though its expensive, I think its a pretty good value if you're in the market for a do-everything smart phone.

Stop living in the past. Basically since the switch to intel, and even a little before, apple products are priced very competitively. Try to get a dell that has the equivalent specs of an iMac, Macbook, Macbook Pro, Mac Pro, Mac Mini etc... and you will see very little price difference.
