Actually Roy Firestone was the orginal host of Up Close. Gary Miller just didn't do as good a job as Roy did.

Chris Myers was the host at one time as well.

It was Firestone, Myers and Miller.

          I think....

Yeah I think Myers was #2 after Firestone. I stopped watching after Firestone left.

I remember that show, and multiple hosts of (don't remember their names). I do remember the one host who also appeared on Jerry McGuire; the one who tried to make his guests cry about something. My cousin and I would watch that show just to laugh at the weird looking facial expressions he had. Funny looking guy.

Yes, that's the show I was thinking of. Firestone did a great job with the show, Myers threw softballs. I dindn't see Miller.

Compare this show to Quite Frankly where SAS was trying to project himself as a Firestone, but he did it with other reporters because it was safer. Sorry, but SAS came across as a suck up to his athletic guests.

Roy Firestone....Wow there's a name you don't see every day. What's he doing these days? I remembered watching his incarnation of UP CLOSE. At times he did seem to suck up to the athletes but he did it in a classic Larry King way. You know, make the guest feel comfortable and throw in questions that aren't exactly softballs but because the guest is so comfortable he/she opens up more and doesn't balk at the question.

That's the mark of a great interviewer. You just don't see that kind of long form interview much these days.

Precisely what I did, other than catching snippets here and there. It's a horrible network now, the MTV of sports. All image, no substance.

You guys must be young! Roy Firestone was the original host of "Up Close," which was an excellent interview show on ESPN back in the early and mid-80s.

Chris Myers and Miller suceeded Firestone. Miller was pretty good. Myers sucked, just as he has in every sports broadcasting job. He's a stiff.

Larry King used to have this skill when he was on the radio and when he first went on CNN. Then he became a celebrity, and his head inflated. He also became a slave to the ratings and made sure he got all the top guests by lobbing huge softballs disguised as questions at every guest.

King is an absolute joke. It's hard to believe this is the same guy who was terrific on radio and TV 20 years ago.

Oh I agree, King has degenerated to nothing more then a boob. In fact it's gotten so bad now that he's misremembering things on the air! I don't watch his show much anymore but i've read of instances where after viewing tape of Gerald Ford saying he wouldn't have gone to Iraq King got confused and asked Bob Woodward what Ford meant. Later on King couldn't even remember Woodward's own first name!

Kinda sad to see a once great interviewer turn into a forgetful old fart.

I agree with this assessment... Kind of like the Arsenio Hall show for sports.

Steven A's schtick was destined to have a short shelf-life, I guess he'll still be hanging around the network though. His radio show is okay too, but I can't listen for too long.
