Re: ESPN Cancels Quite Frankly
Actually Roy Firestone was the orginal host of Up Close. Gary Miller just didn't do as good a job as Roy did.President of the Devils Den

Re: ESPN Cancels Quite Frankly
I remember that show, and multiple hosts of (don't remember their names). I do remember the one host who also appeared on Jerry McGuire; the one who tried to make his guests cry about something. My cousin and I would watch that show just to laugh at the weird looking facial expressions he had. Funny looking guy.PS: You guys are great.

Re: ESPN Cancels Quite Frankly
Compare this show to Quite Frankly where SAS was trying to project himself as a Firestone, but he did it with other reporters because it was safer. Sorry, but SAS came across as a suck up to his athletic guests.Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.Comment

Roy Firestone....Wow there's a name you don't see every day. What's he doing these days? I remembered watching his incarnation of UP CLOSE. At times he did seem to suck up to the athletes but he did it in a classic Larry King way. You know, make the guest feel comfortable and throw in questions that aren't exactly softballs but because the guest is so comfortable he/she opens up more and doesn't balk at the question.
That's the mark of a great interviewer. You just don't see that kind of long form interview much these days.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Chris Myers and Miller suceeded Firestone. Miller was pretty good. Myers sucked, just as he has in every sports broadcasting job. He's a stiff.

King is an absolute joke. It's hard to believe this is the same guy who was terrific on radio and TV 20 years ago.

Re: ESPN Cancels Quite Frankly
Its a late-night talk show, like Letterman or Leno but with sports as a backdrop. Which means the point of the show was to be entertaining and not to showcase his skills as a journalist. So yeah he was hired because he was a good interviewer and buddy- buddy with athletes.
And if you're watching ESPN expecting to see world class journalist you should have quit that about 10-15 years ago.Comment

Steven A's schtick was destined to have a short shelf-life, I guess he'll still be hanging around the network though. His radio show is okay too, but I can't listen for too long."You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier
