I don't really look at it as a con. I'd be the new guy...I'm going to have to earn their respect whether or not they taught me when I was in high school. I just have more of a history with them than I would at another school. Think that's more of a pro from my side...because I'll be more willing to ask for help, and seek assistance if I need it...which I know I will.

No matter where I teach I'm going to be the "student." I'm going to be the new teacher learning the ropes. Doesn't seem like it'd have that big of a negative impact, if any at all.

There is a website that lists all of the educators in Illinois - salaries, I believe there is a librarian in the school district I live in who makes over 100,000 a year.

            WHAT TEACHERS MAKE
The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing
Life. One man, a CEO, decided to explain the problem with education. He
argued, "What's a kid going to learn from someone who decided his best option in life was to become a teacher? "He reminded the other dinner guests what they say about
teachers: "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach. "To stress his point he said to
another guest; "You're a teacher, Bonnie. Be honest. What do you make?" Bonnie, who had a reputation for honesty and frankness replied, "You want to know what I make?
(She paused for a second, then began...) "Well, I make kids work harder than they
ever thought they could. I make a C+ feel like the Congressional Medal of Honor. I make kids sit through 40 minutes of class time when their parents can't make them sit for 5 without an I Pod, Game Cube or movie rental...You want to know what I make?"
(She paused again and looked at each and every person at the table.)"I make kids
wonder. I make them question. I make them criticize. I make them apologize and mean it. I make them have respect and take responsibility for their actions. I teach them to write and then I make them write. I make them read, read, read. I make them show all their work in math. I make my students from other countries learn everything they
need to know in English while preserving their unique cultural identity. I make my classroom a place where all my students feel safe. I make my students stand to say the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, because we live in the United States of America.
Finally, I make them understand that if they use the gifts they were
given, work hard, and follow their hearts, they can succeed in life.
(Bonnie pausedone last time and then continued.)
"Then, when people try to judge me by what I make,
I can hold my head up high and pay no attention because they are ignorant...
You want to know what I make? I MAKE A DIFFERENCE. What do you make?” THIS IS WORTH SENDING TO EVERY TEACHER YOU KNOW.

My wifes a teacher and this is a well known passage circulated around the area about what teachers make

As for the myth of the two month "vacation," c'mon now. No teacher is devoting 8-hour days to preparing for their new curriculum every year before school starts during their precious two month vacation, and a lot of teachers teach the same thing year after year. Not a whole lot of preparation required there. If I can take my laptop on a trip with me and put in an hour here and there "preparing my curriculum," it's a vacation.

I'm not hating on teachers, I'm just saying it's hard for them to scream injustice about being underpaid when they're not only making good money, but not working a lot of hours to get it.
That's not true at all. My dad's a teacher and he actually spent a big part of that "vacation" making up plans and doing stuff for his classroom.

The highest paying job in teaching is drivers ed, its a couple classes and your making over $30 an hour during summers right off the bat.
That's for teachers in wealthy neighborhoods. Teachers who teach in regular public schools don't make nearly the same amount of money which is why there are so many shortages in public schools.

I've never known any teachers who make that much but I do know that principals can get 90,000+ per year.

                    Skerik,

I will say one thing. You try dealing with parents as teacher and see what is harder dealing with parents or A-hole customer! I pick parents! lol

It's possible...It depends on the district and their salary structure. This librarian probably has 25+ years in the district.

Re: What do teachers really make?

It all depends what state and area you are at. Some states have teachers unions and fight for bigger pay. Take teachers in a City like Chicago. They may be part of a union and get paid hourly and get paid overtime. Sometimes these teachersmake well over 100k. In the state of Texas teachers can't form a union and teachers don't really get an hourly wage. The base rate for 1st year Texas teacher is about 27K. Most districts pay above this, but some don't. Areas like Houston and Dallas start teachers at about 45k. Again teachers do not make a lot of money but the other perks are great. Knowing you get Christmas, Thanksgiving and other holidays off is great. When you look at data just know it is construed to the higher porportion. For example Texas teacher average salary is from 48-52K a year. Well in rural areas 30 year teachers don't make that much money, but in bigger city's 1st year teachers may start out that high. I have been teaching and coaching for 5 years. I started out at 32k and know I am up to about 42k. I gladly take any raises i am given and any time off. I also work for about 80 straight days during football season so I need the time off when we get it. If any one is looking to become a teacher my only advice is, see what the world has to offer first. If you do and you still desire to become a teacher you will not always wonder what else you could be doing when you have bad days.
