Re: The WORST Actors/Actresses to Win An Oscar
I guess it was more political in the press that followed...I don't actually recall her competition.
And yeah, with Michael Moore, Al Gore, Brokeback, Happy Feet, etc. it seems that as the years go by the Oscars are less and less for achievement in a given year and instead are the kitschy issue of the moment.
I would say Benigni. He might be a great actor (I don't know) but I can't imagine his performance being better than Hanks in Saving Private Ryan or Norton in American History X that year. I'm surprised Liotta wasn't nominated for Goodfellas.Comment

Don't understand the hate for Nick Cage. He's a VERY versatile, good actor who can play comedy and drama.
Plus his performance in "Leaving Las Vegas" was stunning, very Oscar-worthy.
The day that Tom Cruise wins an Oscar -- God help us -- is the day this question will be put to bed forever, at least from the male side. The most overrated actor of the last 25 years, hands down.
Take care,

I personally don't understand the hate for Tom Cruise that some people have. He's every bit as good an actor as Nicolas Cage and neither of those guys can really play very different types of characters. I thought Cruise was great in A Few Good Men and some other movies. I never think he's bad (he did play a pretty bad drunk at the beginning of Last Samurai but was good in the rest of it).
Lastly I will say almost every actor is overrated. They usually play themselves and just read dialogue. Its a big reason most actors play similar roles or have a similar feel to every role they do. I laugh when someone like Jennifer Anniston wants to "break out" of her Rachel role when she's the same character in every movie. I think Ed Norton Jr. is one of the few actors that can play a wide variety of roles and be great in all of them and he was great in American History X. Al Pacino is incredibly overrated imo. Re: The WORST Actors/Actresses to Win An Oscar
I would say he is every bit as good as Norton. It's just that Cage will appear in any movie as long as he gets paid. Movies that were actually good that Cage has been in were made better because of Cage's acting skills. I still prefer Norton simply because, if he's starring in a movie, I can count on it not being totally stupid. It might still be a bad movie, but not in "the movie makes you stupider just by watching it" way many Cage movies are bad.
It's not like Edward Norton as the star or anyone else for that matter was going to make Ghost Rider a good movie.Last edited by Defel; 02-28-2007, 10:54 AM.Comment

Re: The WORST Actors/Actresses to Win An Oscar
I dont know about that. He was great in Born on the fourth of July and Magnolia. Cruise reminds me of Will Smith. They both are basically playing themselves in most movies they do but when asked to go outside of the box they have the chops to pull it off.Comment

Re: The WORST Actors/Actresses to Win An Oscar
I wouldn't say they are more actors than "movie stars". All of they're characters are very appealing no matter what because the movie star is so appealing."Maybe I can't win. But to beat me, he's going to have to kill me. And to kill me, he's gonna have to have the heart to stand in front of me. And to do that, he's got to be willing to die himself. I don't know if he's ready to do that."Comment

Re: The WORST Actors/Actresses to Win An Oscar
Marisa Tomei
I'll need to see the Actor list
Hmm quite a few bad ones i'll go chronologically
1944: Bing Crosby (Going My Way)
1949: Broderick Crawford (All the King's Men)
1955: Ernest Borgnine (Marty)
1968: Cliff Robertson (Charly)
1969: John Wayne (True Grit)*
1984: F. Murray Abraham (Amadeus)
1995: Nick Cage (Leaving Las Vegas)
1998: Roberto Benigni (Life is Beautiful)**
2002: Adrien Brody (The Pianist)
* He was good in macho roles and he did deserve the Oscar in other years but this was more of a lifetime achievement kind of thing for him.
** I'm sure he's a fine actor in his native Italy but really he shouldn't have won overall.Comment
