That's what I got from the rest of that post, at least. I could very easily be wrong.
I dont get that either though. That year Denzel and Halle won. If anyone's win was political it was Denzel's. They snubbed him for the Hurricane and Malcolm X (He should have won for X) and they paid him back by giving him the award for Training Day (He was great in that but it wasnt Oscar worthy).

Halle didnt have a great film before that so it wasnt a payback Oscar. Also, her competition was pretty weak that year. I just dont get how anyone could say her win was political.

Not saying I agree with it...just saying I don't think he meant it political as in politics.

Have to agree about the Denzel point, though. Should've won for Malcolm X. And I don't remember...did he win anything, or get nominated at least, for John Q?

Not for john Q. He's been nominated 5 times and won twice. Won: Glory and Training Day, Lost: Cry Freedom, Malcolm X and the Hurricane.

Damn, I thought his performance in John Q was a lot more oscar worthy than Training Day. Never saw Cry Freedom but the others were all good.

Looking at it...Denzel has a nice resume. Damn.

I guess it was more political in the press that followed...I don't actually recall her competition.

And yeah, with Michael Moore, Al Gore, Brokeback, Happy Feet, etc. it seems that as the years go by the Oscars are less and less for achievement in a given year and instead are the kitschy issue of the moment.

Re: The WORST Actors/Actresses to Win An Oscar

I fully agree with the idea that Halle Berry is on the short list of worst actresses to win an Oscar. Her role wasn't that good, to be honest. Instead, she showed us all of her naughty bits and everyone in Hollywood called it brave and mindblowing. Hell, I know girls that will show the same for some beads during Mardi Gras, where's their Oscar?

Anyone else remember Halle Berry playing Storm in the first X-Men movie and having her "accent" go in and out throughout the whole film? It was so bad that they completely removed the accent in the next two films.

I agree with Gwyneth Paltrow as well. First of all, she thinks she's British. Second, she and her whiny-*** husband named their kid Apple. And third, because she is from Hollywood royalty, everyone automatically gives her a free pass and assumes she is good, when in reality, she's average (*cough* Sophia Coppala *cough*).

It kills me that each of these hacks have Oscars while an actress like Kate Winslet has been nominated 5 times and still has none.

                  Bah.

While I agree that Gwyneth Paltrow isn't the greatest actress but she's far better than the pine tree that is Sofia Coppola(who is a decent director as it turns, must run in the family).

Whoopi Goldberg is a prime example of the politics of the Oscars. She should have easily one a Oscar for her role in the Color Purple but was passed up because of Hollywood BS so the next time she starred in a successful movie they just gave it to her. Ghost was easily one her weakest performances as an actress which includes the Jumping Jack Flash among others.

                        Marisa Tomei

I'll need to see the Actor list

Hmm quite a few bad ones i'll go chronologically

1944: Bing Crosby (Going My Way)
1949: Broderick Crawford (All the King's Men)
                        1955: Ernest Borgnine (Marty)
                        1968: Cliff Robertson (Charly)
                        1969: John Wayne (True Grit)*
                        1984: F. Murray Abraham (Amadeus)
1995: Nick Cage (Leaving Las Vegas)
1998: Roberto Benigni (Life is Beautiful)**
                        2002: Adrien Brody (The Pianist)

                        * He was good in macho roles and he did deserve the Oscar in other years but this was more of a lifetime achievement kind of thing for him.

** I'm sure he's a fine actor in his native Italy but really he shouldn't have won overall.

Even more amazing is the fact that she had a corresponding Golden Globe nomination for each of those 5 films yet came up winless there too.

Especially considering the fact that he was going against Tom Hanks who was nominated for his role in Saving Private Ryan. Couple that with the fact that Shakespeare in Love won Best Pic over Ryan made '98 completely B.S. for the Oscars.
