I think the hate is based on the fact that stuff like this never works out because the writers never have a clue how to work the characters.
The commercials work because the writers understand the limitations and expectations of the characters. But, I fear that on a television show, writers will try too much with the cavemen and make them unbelievable and likely unfunny.
Now, if ABC gets the people behind the Geico commercials to work hands-on with the development of this project I expect it will do well.
