Re: Why Hip Hop is dead
Yeah sure, there's a difference, inasmuch as there is a difference between scatting and jazz. Rapping is a part of hip hop so seperating the two in this case really really makes no sense. You may not like what you hear on the radio, but it is as much hip hop as all those other artists who don't get radio play. Just because it's what the general public wants to hear doesn't take it's being hip hop away. Contrary to some opinions, you don't have to have a vocabulary as large as Common's or have a lyrical flow on par with Nas to be included in the culture of hip hop.PS: You guys are great.

lol I don't want to say I was a fan of Master P's label now...my favorite joint was "Light it Up". As for Cash Money, they really weren't running **** at the time. Bling bling my ***. Juvenile was keeping that label in the public's eye.Comment

Well I was a fan of No Limit and if they were still doing anything I probably still would be. I still got all of my No Limit collection from the late 90's. Even then though, I knew they weren't the best lyricists or what not, but it really didn't matter.PS: You guys are great.

For example, a lot of what gets played on the radio is designed to make people feel good and get them on their feet. Thats rap music to me.
Hip hop on the other hand, is designed to be more thought provoking and is more geared towards an audience that appreciates the lyrics more than the beat.
Not many people have the vocabulary of Common, nor the ability to infuse it into their lyrics. The same goes with lyrical flow and Nas. And its not so much the delivery of the message, but the message itself that separates the two.
But I do agree with you though. They arent two different genres. They are more like sub-categories of Hip Hop (Traditional and New Age). Although I will say that some artists do a good job of combining the two.Comment

Re: Why Hip Hop is dead
Me too. I mean, I think hip hop is the music as a whole, while rapping is just one part of it. I basically see it the same as what a rock vocalist or guitarist is to rock, but I don't call rock "gutaring."

Re: Why Hip Hop is dead
But it was all about the production with Cash Money and Mannie had that on lock. I would even go so far to say he is a top 15-20 producer of all-time."Maybe I can't win. But to beat me, he's going to have to kill me. And to kill me, he's gonna have to have the heart to stand in front of me. And to do that, he's got to be willing to die himself. I don't know if he's ready to do that."Comment
