Re: Why Hip Hop is dead

IMO, there is a difference between hip hop and rap. Hip Hop is still alive, but right now Rap music is what gets airplay.

Yeah sure, there's a difference, inasmuch as there is a difference between scatting and jazz. Rapping is a part of hip hop so seperating the two in this case really really makes no sense. You may not like what you hear on the radio, but it is as much hip hop as all those other artists who don't get radio play. Just because it's what the general public wants to hear doesn't take it's being hip hop away. Contrary to some opinions, you don't have to have a vocabulary as large as Common's or have a lyrical flow on par with Nas to be included in the culture of hip hop.

Well I was a fan of No Limit and if they were still doing anything I probably still would be. I still got all of my No Limit collection from the late 90's. Even then though, I knew they weren't the best lyricists or what not, but it really didn't matter.

True, but I think where the difference lies is in the content.

For example, a lot of what gets played on the radio is designed to make people feel good and get them on their feet. Thats rap music to me.

Hip hop on the other hand, is designed to be more thought provoking and is more geared towards an audience that appreciates the lyrics more than the beat.

Not many people have the vocabulary of Common, nor the ability to infuse it into their lyrics. The same goes with lyrical flow and Nas. And its not so much the delivery of the message, but the message itself that separates the two.

But I do agree with you though. They arent two different genres. They are more like sub-categories of Hip Hop (Traditional and New Age). Although I will say that some artists do a good job of combining the two.

I agree with Blaxican. To me, there is a difference between hip hop and rap.

That is correct. Rap is the music that came out of the culture. Anyone who draws a line between the two needs a history lesson.

As far as Hip-Hop being dead...LMAO!

Me too. I mean, I think hip hop is the music as a whole, while rapping is just one part of it. I basically see it the same as what a rock vocalist or guitarist is to rock, but I don't call rock "gutaring."

Okay, I can agree with that. Maybe I should look at giving it a different term. I was thinking of the good ol' stuff like B.I., Pac, Nas etc. as hip hop and the stuff that's out now as rap. Anyway, whatever you call it, it's definitely dead.

I don't think its dead. I think its alive and well, but you just gotta know where to look. Its the same for any genre nowadays.

Yeah, I guess you're right. I just tend to listen to the old stuff more than go hunting for something else. I don't listen to the radio at all. It makes my head hurt.

Mannie Fresh is a legend on the producer tip. He pretty much made Cash Money. Juvie is and still is the best MC of that bunch, while Wayne is the most popular and BG is solid.

But it was all about the production with Cash Money and Mannie had that on lock. I would even go so far to say he is a top 15-20 producer of all-time.
