Saw is up there, just not the best IMO. After going through movies in my head, I'd actually put it higher than I originally said. But #1 I'd give it to Planet of the Apes, just because that ending made me sit there completely bewildered. If not PotA, then Se7en for sure.
See, I'm just not seeing where Se7en beats Saw in terms of a shocking ending. It made me go "Oh sheet!" for sure, but it didn't make me like... fall out of my chair. Se7en was a much better built movie for the ending (and maybe a better ending overall), but to me, nothing will beat what the writers of Saw gave us.

Actually, out of your list, I would probably disagree with all of them (in terms of topping Saw) except for Memento and maybe The Sixth Sense, and I've seen all of those. But to each its own.

Se7en was an "oh sheet" filled movie, period.

Planet of the Apes, absolutely. I had just watched most of them during a Sci-fi Channel marathon in '98 or '99. First one caught me waaaaay off-guard.

I'll try to think of others, but two moments that immediately jumped out to me while reading this thread:

      Psycho's ending, and Oldboy's twist.

Well one can laugh and still say "Holy Sheet," which is what I did. He was told he'd be going out with a bang and he certainly did.

This thread is starting to focus on just endings and I'll add a few

The endings to No Way Out, Taxi Driver, and Dr Strangelove

For some non endings I'll add:

THE scene in The Crying Game- For me this is Number 1 because I totally never saw it coming-A few things in Se7en tipped me off so I actually wasn't that shocked, but I would still put it at number two just for the sheer audacity.

Opening sequence of Saving Private Ryan

The reveal of the big secret in Children of Men

The original "I'll be back" scene in Terminator

The movie just didn't make sense to me...

Brad Pitt is Norton's split personality, yet he fights himself and is dragged around by the invisible man when shown via security camera at the end of the movie?

The guys that fight each other in the basement... Are they fighting other physical people, or are they just punching and kicking their own asses like Norton does?

And all that other stuff with the guys dressing in black and doing the conformist/anti-whatever also seemed random and poorly done.

I've read a few of Chuck Palahniuk's books, and they're kind of "out there." He's a good writer, and uniquely vivid, even grotesque, but most of his books have a "WTF" aspect at some point that ultimately makes the reader question the logic of the characters and their reaction to a situation. For me, it's a situation of "Great story, but why did he put this random crap in? Now I'm confused." Survivor is a good example of this. Good book, interesting storyline and characters, and then at parts it's just... random, even confusing.

Choke is a great book, with a very unique plot and characters. Of his books, I've found Choke to be the best and most understandable, through and through.

I've never read Fight Club, and having seen the movie first, I don't plan on reading it in the future. It was only coincidental that I ultimately discovered Chuck Palahniuk had written it, as I was reading his other books before seeing Fight Club listed with his other works.

Generally, I am tired of movies where people are haunted, harassed, bothered, killed, or otherwise affected by other characters that ultimately end up being a split personality. That plot is so overdone lately it's just boring and a letdown when discovered. Hide and Seek, Amityville Horror, and Secret Window come to mind. I found all to be interesting, until the true villan is revealed. At which point, I am generally saying, "Oh man, not this **** again!"

I don't know what the need is for authors to use the split personality. It seems like a cop out to me, and in my opinion, often results in a story being a letdown and an easy way to wrap things up without any creativity. It's also so common lately that it's not even shocking anymore.

Re: 10 "oh sheet!" movie moments

In regards to the biggest "Oh ****" moment in a movie... I give it to Saw, when Jigsaw gets up from the floor and walks out. That was just bonkos.

Saw is probably one of the best movies I've seen in my lifetime. The sequels have progressively descended into mediocrity. The second was too much like a house party, and the third was way too focused on gore and graphic details at the cost of storyline.

I also would list Blair Witch Project as at least a nominee. It didn't really have a single "Oh ****" moment, but I think the movie did have a vibe throughout, and the closing shot in the basement was pretty startling to me.

EDIT: My favorite comedic "oh ****" moment, is in the movie with Rob Schneider, Adam Sandler, and Rachel McAdams where they switch sexes... The Hot Chick. They are in the jewelery store and the lady dramatically opens the jewelery box that holds the pendant. There are drums playing in the background, which adds to drama to the moment. The lady then says "Stop banging them drums!" and the camera pans to show Adam Sandler actually playing the drums. I laughed out loud in the theater when I saw that, and it's a small "oh ****" moment worth watching the movie for.

                As earlier stated...

The greatest "Oh Sheet" moment is...

Vader-"Obi Wan never told you what happened to your father."

Luke-"He told me enough! He told me YOU killed him!"

                Vader-"No.... ...I am your father."

GAME. SET. MATCH. All other moments are merely pretenders.

Buddy sure picked the right clip for number 1. It's almost something that I can't watch again. That was just brutal.

The moment is Misery still makes me cringe.

                      Such a great movie though.

Also Sixth Sense belongs on the list.
I saw Sixth Sense in the theater, but I got there late...when I arrived it was about 10 minutes in...my first scene was when the kid is walking home and comes in the door to see Bruce Willis talking to his mom.

Needless to say, since I missed the beginning of the movie, I had a really big "oh sheet!" moment at the end of that film...
