Ozzy Osbourne - The Black Rain

Ozzy Osbourne Brings The Black Rain
First new album from the madman in over six years.

On May 22nd, 2007 the crown prince of modern darkness (at least within the realm of popular music) himself, Ozzy Osbourne, will release his first new studio album in over six years.

Entitled Black Rain, the album will feature songs with titles such as "I Don't Wanna Stop," "Not Going Away," "Thank God For The Almighty Dollar," "Civilize The Universe," "Here For You," "Lay Your World On Me," "Black Rain," "Countdown's Begun," "11 Silver," "Civilize The Universe," and "Trap Door."

Black Rain was co-produced by Ozzy and Kevin Churko and recorded it with his touring band, which consists of Zakk Wylde (guitar), Mike Bordin (drums) and Blasko (bass). It was recorded at Ozzy's home studio in L.A.

"It's a well-put together album. I think it's evident that it hasn't been just slapped out and put down," says Ozzy of Black Rain. "I took my time on the album and Zakk [Wylde] plays some amazing stuff as always."

Osbourne will support Black Rain with a world tour beginning in Moscow on May 27 which continues through July 6. Then starting July 12 in Seattle, he'll headline the 12th annual Ozzfest tour throughout America.

I hope Zakk comes up with some crazy riffs for this album.

Zakk is one of the best guitarists of his generation, but his playing has gotten stale lately. He needs to mix it up some, and go more for melody than speed, which is his current(read: last 10 years) fixation.

I was a crazy Black Sabbath Fan. I missed seeing him with Sabbath but did see Ozzy on tour after his first solo album.
A few months ago I was channel surfing and came across Ozfest. Big buildup to where Ozzy is going to perform with a couple of the Sabbath guys. So I wait for that and he sounds just awful. Looks awful too on stage. It was sad.

I know this is Zakk, and not Ozzy... But damn I had to post that solo somewhere!

I WISH Zakk would do more of that. That solo had such a beautiful melody, and VERY blues influenced. That solo had so much emotion, which his blistering harmonics rarely show.

Zakk is a guitar god and we have to admit that Ozzy has done a good job working excellent guitarists, such as Iommi, Rhodes, and even bassist Trujillo.

Ok... Where to begin? This album kicks major ****ing ***! From the opening note to the final note, this album is great.

Zakk seems to be kept in check to some degree to keep this from becoming BLS with guest vocalist Ozzy. As there are many spots on the album that you could just feel a solo coming, only for it to never come. That isn't exactly a bad thing either. It makes the few solos that Zakk does rip a lot more ear-catching.

The album has a very political point of attack, but it isn't so straight-forward that people who hate political music will hate it. It uses a lot of imagery and metaphors for beliefs.

Ozzy can't sing, and everyone knows that, but his voice isn't a detriment to this album. In fact, even though he can't sing, his vocals are still somehow appealing. His writing on this album is as good as it's ever been. I'm not quite sure how much of it he actually wrote, but only one song comes across as a song that you can just tell Zakk wrote(it's a piano ballad love song).

While it has a very political point, there is also a few good love/endearment tracks on here to change it up from time to time. The very best one being the last one.

Overall, this album is IMO the BEST rock album of the past 4-5 years, bar none. It is just very well written and played amazingly on top of that. The one thing this album was missing was a nice melodic solo from Zakk, but missing that doesn't take a damn thing from this masterpiece.

                      Grade: A+++++++++++++++++++

I'm not a big fan of I Don't Wanna Stop but I'm looking forward to the rest of the album. I heard on Sirius this morning that Ozzy is having a video contest for who can make the best video for I Don't Wanna Stop. That's pretty cool.
