That's a tough question. As a coach, all the basics should of been taught. At 12 years old, the boy should of been taught how to slide 4-5 years before this happened as well. Unless it was the boys first time playing baseball. Theres alot of questions to be answered. I know this, I've seen kids get injured sliding feet first, and they were taught how to slide. Like I said, theres alot of questions to be answered here.

Injuries happen and perhaps the kid was so excited when he ran to 2nd that he just did whatever seemed natural rather then what he was taught. You can't really pin that on the coach especially one that's been coaching for 20 years.
You would be surprised at some coaches, not all, desire to win at all cost. Even during machine pitch, there was a competitive coach that just wanted to win all the time. This was 8 and 9 year olds.

Parents add to it as well, by yelling negative comments at their own kids and umpires.

      But that's another thread.

On close plays at the plate, everyone has to slide to avoid an injury on a close play at the plate. So, our team needs to know how to slide.

I don't understand how people can take sides without knowing more information. How can you agree with the mom if you don't know whether or not the coach taught him? Maybe the kid is just an idiot. You people are way too quick to jump to conclusions.

especially when Scott didn't even take the time to read it... Way to form opinions without knowing anything about the incident.

the kid was 12. I would think that he knew how to slide by the age of 12

That is the question if the mom is right I am agreeing with her if she is wrong then I don't.

That is not the point, my point is if the mom is right then I agree with her. My point is everybody wants to say sue happy, I am saying if the coach didn't teach him the right way then he should be held responsible

This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever read. As a baseball player, and a sane human being, I have no idea how someone can be sued over this. Major League players still occasionally get hurt or break ankles sliding in to bases...do you really think it is because they were not taught properly?

The injury was surely caused by the kid's own mistake and not by an error in coaching.

Where will this stop? If this woman wins, every person can sue their coach because of injury. "I got hit in the face with a curveball and broke my nose...the coach did not teach me how to bat correctly...I'm going to sue him."

Come on. Injuries are a part of the game.

Seriously, this is just sad. Myself and 2-3 friends coach a little league team (we played baseball through HS - my best friend being one of the sports stories of the year in our paper due to the way he pitched as a sophmore when our high school won state) and sometimes no matter how much you teach the kids will not do it. T

There are so many basics to teach to kids, and when you have so many things to worry about and not much time to teach (we at max get 1 or 2 practices a week due to field and time constraints) you can't expect to teach everything. As coaches, we have met one goal for this season - to not get ten run ruled. Some kids come in with the inherent skills to play the game (hand-eye coordination for batting and fielding, reaction time for the ball off the bat) whereas others... well would be better off not suited playing sports in general.

With that side rant aside, there are no grounds for the mother to sue. If she wants her kid to play baseball, let him play. If she wants him to live in a bubble, so be it.

This is stupid as all get out, My buddy a few years ago at 15 broke his ankle and could never join the Navy like he hoped.....He slid into homeplate pretty much the wrong way. I think he should sue the coach b/c it was his fault.

Also I hurt my arm when i was 12 years old, Mostly b/c my open league coach never taught me right mechanics. I won't blame him completely but he told me everythign would be allright after I got older and everything got worse...I had a bright future but I lost it b/c I wasn't tough right mechanics...Maybe I should sue my coach due to the Millions I lost.

Crap like this is why I'm probably going to stop coaching AAU basketball after this summer.
