getting the hang of it (I think). Not sure what was going on but I turned the cpu off and left it unplugged for a minute. Then firefox and thunderbird opened up. let me make sure I did this right

    1. double click the file
    2. drag the icon into the application folder
    3. drag the virtual disk icon it leaves into the trash

    that it ?

Yes, although, if you add other folders/documents to the right of that line, you can arrange them in any order you want. The Applications folder doesn't HAVE to be directly next to the trash is all I'm saying, it just needs to be on the other side of that line.

Also, related tip, if you don't want that dock to CONSTANTLY there at the bottom, you can change that in System Preferences. Another way to reduce clutter and reclaim screenspace. If you click on the Apple icon in the upper right, then system preferences, then "dock" There is an option to "Automatically Hide and Show the Dock". If you check it, it will only appear when you bring the mouse pointer to the bottom of the screen. Give it a whirl.

EXACTLY! If it's an application you use most frequently, go into the applications folder, and move any icon into the dock by dragging it there. If there's some thing on the dock you don't use, just drag it off. You don't have to woorry about creating/deleting shortcuts manually, this dragging/dropping process takes care of that automatically without moving/modifying the actual location of the program. So when you drag the Firefox icon to the dock from you apps folder, for example, it's still in both the application folder and on the dock.

'bout time you show up in a Mac thread Silverstring!

You can also control-click (right-click) in the Dock and access the Dock controls there.

thanks, I messed with it. I think I like it always there. Any way to maximize web pages / email or what ever page I am viewing besides dragging the bottom right corner ??

What I do is click the green button (plus sign when your cursor is over it), which usually makes it aligned to the top left corner (and most of the time, larger) and then drag the bottom right of the window to the bottom right of my screen.

Another thing I suggest is going to System Preferences (click the blue apple on your top bar -- if you didn't know) and just looking around there and fiddling with some options, as most of them are pretty straightforward as to what they change. If there's something you're unclear about, just ask here.

cool, didn't see the blue apple. Pretty amazed at how easy it was to connect my stuff. Printer plugged right in, router plugged right in, digital camera plugged right in. No installing drivers or anything ! Only problem with my camera is I can't find any setting on the computer that will delete the images off my camera once I transfer them.

I can't believe this !! My external HD that had all my photos and home movies of my son was thought to be dead. Windows stopped recognizing it and I have been trying for 2 weeks to fix it. Kept getting a parameter incorrect error. Anyway, plug it up to the Apple and it works like a charm !!!

That's the beauty of Macs, mostly every peripheral works right off the bat!

If I recall, there should be a setting somewhere in iPhoto that will delete your pictures from the camera. I don't use my digital camera all that often, so I can't be of much help there.

thanks. I'm sure its there some where. Another question: I am trying to delete some files off my external HD and it says I don't have sufficient privalages. Where can I change that?

Hmm, I'm not sure. Never used an external HD. Maybe it has to do with user accounts? Did you create more than one? If so, maybe you aren't on the main ('Admin') account? I'm sure someone here has the answer.

                          Re: Apple Mac Lovers

As for deleting the pics off your camera:

When importing photos in iPhoto, look down near the bottom and there should be a check box that says "Delete photos after import". That's your answer.

As for the hard drive issue, you may want to ctrl-click on it and select "properties". From there, you can see the privileges you have for that drive and hopefully allow you to use it. I would look for something like that on my external drive right now, but I'm not on my Mac at home....unfortunately a PC at work.

One thing to remember about Macs and deleting things. If you want to erase something on a disk (external drive, flash drive, even a floppy), if you drag it to the trash, it's still "there" on the drive. You need to empty the trash first, and then eject the drive. Otherwise, the next time you mount the drive, the trashed stuff will still be there.

Also, put a blank CD in your Mac sometime. You'll see a CD show up on your desktop that you can name, and then you can drag files to it just like a folder. When you go to eject it, the trash can will change to a burn symbol and you can burn the disk then. Just giving you a heads up in case you didn't know....it's REALLY easy.

thanks dbeth. As far as the HD, I found out (google) that the drive is set up with a NTFS Partition and that makes it read only on Mac. Going to try and move the contents to the mac drive, then format the external with the disk utility and move everything back .

Yeah I had the exact some problem with an old HD. I did exactly that and it fixed my problem. You should be fine
