The Turnbyturn is fantastic - I've been using it for a few months now.
But as far as widgets I don't think that is it. Mac OS had widgets waaaay back early on in the early years of OSX. It was in something called the "Dashboard." http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/
I don't know why they wouldn't want to just bring that over to iOS and utilize the empty space in Spotlight.
Even if it is a few button presses more, it's doable. Plus, toggles can easily be throwing in the notification center.
There are plenty ways to do it - they just haven't.
