Stupid question about the time traveling robots. Why don't they just go back in time and kill Sarah's parents or grandparents? That would seem to take care of their problem and give them the world. Clearly these are American made terminating robots because they certainly aren't that bright.

I don't think there's every been an explanation for why they don't just kill Sarah's parents. The only thing I could consider is the possibility that Sarah was adopted and her birth parents are unknown to both her and John. So there's no way to send a robot back when no one knows who her parents are.

Which made sense in T2 since saving Sarah Connor wasn't the Terminator's order and she was resisting him.

It didn't fit at all yesterday. Good example of poor writing and HORRID acting.

That line is also from the original Terminator - when Kyle Reese said it to Sarah.

Yup, it's definitely one of the signifying moments of T2 and I felt it was forced in this first episode. I really don't like her acting.

My bitching about this show doesn't deny the fact that I still enjoyed it though, keep in mind. I'm just a sci-fi geek at core so these small things bug me.

I've never seen any of the Terminator movies, so I really don't understand what the show is about.

I meant to watch this last night, but I didn't get home until it was halfway over. Is it worth my time to try to find the episode in "alternative" ways?

You should probably watch the movies instead, and worry about the show later.

Sarah Conner isn't a robot....

True...and no one can act better than Arnold...his grasp of the english language, all the nuances, he's just so deep of an actor. Only Jean Claude Van Damme can begin to compare to that level of mastery.

Make no mistake, T2:Judgement Day is a very flawed movie, particularly on the level of the characterization of the Terminators. Where it is very successful is the action, pacing, the surrogate family allegory and the development of Sarah Conner.


I'm not some fanboy that's going to blow on anything not done by James Cameron, and worship everything he does. When I criticize something, it's based on the roots of storytelling and the basic tenets of filmmaking and performance. I'm looking at their use of archetypes and Aristotlean principles, and how their dynamics and execution is unsuccessful. So dull sardonicisms are misplaced if you're going to discuss this with me.

I think we just differ on basic principles...it's like in sports gaming, I seriously hate sliders and think they ruin games for people. People play games looking for bugs, looking for errors, looking to rip it completely apart. Sometimes you just have to let something be and enjoy it. I know I'm not a hardcore cinema guy either...I don't know "insert name here" and his amazing camera style. Then again, I personally just associate the Terminator franchise with extremely enjoyable throwaway action movies. I didn't watch T2 to see the deep dynamic with the foster family that lasted 10 minutes.

If there isn't solid character development in this show I'll eventually stop watching...I just know that they can't do everything you mention in a single episode. Hell, even in one movie it's tough to really touch on everything in an effective manner. They only had 40 minutes to introduce a somewhat new audience to Terminators (not everyone's seen them) and the universe.

I didn't go in looking for errors. For my career, I have to study story structure and storytelling techniques, so the issues they are having with archetypes, dialogue and performance stand out to me at first glance. You play a lot of sports games, how long does it take you to realize that NBA08 needs some fundamental reprogramming to be a successful franchise? I'm just describing what I see in the show. I'm not trying to harp or exaggerate the flaws any.

James Cameron likes family allegories. The surrogate family I'm referring to isn't his foster family. It's the symbolic family triangle of the T-800, John and Sarah. John hasn't known his estranged mother for all of his life, so he has to adjust to her reentry into his existence. The Terminator of course isn't his actual father, but plays as a mentor character and fraternal figure for John, which is the only reason people would get an emotional reaction for John having to sacrifice his "father" at the end of the movie. This is why James Cameron's Terminator series are milestones in action, rather than throwaway action movies. He doesn't use action simply as stimulus, but as punctuation for symbolism to amplify his characters in a mythological context.

It's one of the most popular franchises of all time. That having been said, I'm extremely forgiving towards exposition in the early parts of any sci fi series.

I understand all that, but you didn't write, direct, shoot or act in the show, so why should my opinion of it cause you to be sarcastic towards me? This isn't a personal attack on you, or anyone who likes the show. Everyone likes something that isn't good, but people seem to forget that I wrote that.
