Dopamine is released, yes, and the action of dopamine is consistent regardless of the means by which it was released. But dopamine is also released in any general "pleasure reward" situation such as eating tasty foods, sex, or exercise. And I don't think anyone would argue that any of those other things that release dopamine is detrimental or equivalent to heroin in any way.Comment

A new health scare erupted over soft drinks last night amid evidence they may cause serious cell damage. Research from a British university suggests a common preservative found in drinks such as Fanta and Pepsi Max has the ability to switch off vital parts of DNA.
The problem - more usually associated with ageing and alcohol abuse - can eventually lead to cirrhosis of the liver and degenerative diseases such as Parkinson's.
The findings could have serious consequences for the hundreds of millions of people worldwide who consume fizzy drinks. They will also intensify the controversy about food additives, which have been linked to hyperactivity in children.
Concerns centre on the safety of E211, known as sodium benzoate, a preservative used for decades by the £74bn global carbonated drinks industry. Sodium benzoate derives from benzoic acid.
It occurs naturally in berries, but is used in large quantities to prevent mould in soft drinks such as Sprite, Oasis and Dr Pepper. It is also added to pickles and sauces.
Sodium benzoate has already been the subject of concern about cancer because when mixed with the additive vitamin C in soft drinks, it causes benzene, a carcinogenic substance. A Food Standards Agency survey of benzene in drinks last year found high levels in four brands which were removed from sale.
Now, an expert in ageing at Sheffield University, who has been working on sodium benzoate since publishing a research paper in 1999, has decided to speak out about another danger. Professor Peter Piper, a professor of molecular biology and biotechnology, tested the impact of sodium benzoate on living yeast cells in his laboratory.
What he found alarmed him: the benzoate was damaging an important area of DNA in the "power station" of cells known as the mitochondria.
He told The Independent on Sunday: "These chemicals have the ability to cause severe damage to DNA in the mitochondria to the point that they totally inactivate it: they knock it out altogether...Comment

LOL, another post that soda is going to kill me, by someone who has a bunch of posts in the beer thread. Am I the only one that finds that comical? Soda is the death of me, but you drinking beer isn't going to harm you one bit huh? LOL
Shall I go into that thread and post all the ill effects of alcohol? I've never drank an ounce of alcohol in my life.

Think your kids will never drink soda?..maybe not when you're around...
Unfortunately, I'm sure there are hundreds of studies which will show that kids who see their parents smoke and drink alcohol....will do the same themselves.
You can forget about the "do as I say, not as I do" brah....they're gonna do what they see....ESPECIALLY if daddy does it.....plus it also helps that you probably are going to be giving them a free supply when they get old enough...

Trust me...I know what I'm talkin' about...I helped my dad finish off plenty of fifths and quarts of Scotch....and he was never the wiser.
Good thing I wised up at 20 years old...or I was headed down the same road as pop....a regular chip off the old block.

Sodium Benzoate, the preservative from hell (and the bane of diet soda's everywhere)! It will mutate your DNA, steal your soul, and a bunch of other nastiness...right?
Except it's naturally found in cranberries, cinnamon, cloves, and apples. An apple a day won't keep the doctor away, it will KILL YOU!
Plus, the guy in the article quoted earlier is also huge on wi-fi causing cancer, and I've yet to see folks in this thread advocate banning cell phones.
And yeah, I like my beer and wine in moderation, drink diet soda on occassion, and let my son have a coke when we go out to eat. Yep, I was saying the same thing, evreybody wants to jump on soda, but will drink beer like crazy and in the long that probably does more damage to your body than soda does. lolComment
