JSKYWALKER, I own a Zune and at two times in the last few years I have owned a 3G and 5G iPod. I think where the one has its weaknesses, the other makes up for in the strengths dept. and vice versa. Me personally, I really like the Zune hardware better than the iPod. It just looks a lot cleaner as opposed to the iPod look imo. I was getting tired that Apple hadn't done much in revising the iPod the last few years due to no real competition. Speaking of the hardware, I really like the navigation better on the Zune as opposed to the iPod. Finding my music is much easier imo with the Zune.

One of the weaknesses that I find with the Zune is the software itself. There are a few things that really needs to be fixed imo. I'm hoping that with a future revision or the Zune's coming in the Fall they will have fixed that stuff. This is one area where the iPod wins with itunes, they have refined that software to perfection as I remember their first few versions of itunes were just as bad as the Zune software. This is understandable to a degree with MS, but they should have learned from their competitor's mistakes.

Also I had to get MS technical support involved to get the Zune running fine on MS VISTA. But don't let something like that stop you from enjoying this thing.

You do get a larger screen with the Zune as opposed to the iPod which makes a big difference imo. I have uploaded videos on this thing to watch, such as movies nad even narrated power point presentations that we build at work to test on here and they looked good.

I don't like the battery life with the Zune, that is something else that I think could be improved upon with a future revision.

One last problem, I'm down to about 4GB on the Zune. With the new iPod and Zune releasing in the Fall, I really look forward to a 60-80GB model of either one. At that point I'll use my PRP plan on the Zune to put towards one of the larger Zune's or iPod. I am hoping that MS does release a larger Zune + fix the software and I'm game for a new one.

Here are a few Zune threads on OS that might help

Here are some pics of my Zune, please excuse the blur as my son kept on pushing me arm as I was taking the pictures.

Good luck, if you have any questions let me know. Hopefully some iPod people or others with Zunes could chime in to help you out. One last thing, I recommend going to Best Buy, Circuit City, or whichever stores have this in your area and play around with both.
Thanks candyman56 for the input. I have started to lean towards the Zune since I started this post. Again, thanks for taking out the time to chime in. PEACE!!!!!

      Re: Ipod or Zune?

Zune is a great player. As candy said, the software isn't. I've had mine for half a year now and love it. I upgraded from a creative zen which had even less battery life, so the zune's battery life is an upgrade for me. If you set the backlight to the lowest setting and turn off wireless you should get a decent amount of battery life.

Right now the wifi on it is basically worthless unless you know some people that have their own zune.

Until you understand how the software works and how, when, and why it transfers songs, it's a pain. Once you understand it and the options you have, the software is ok, not great.

How long is the battery life just playing songs/watching movies?

I'd say one movie takes up a good chunk of battery life... you could maybe squeeze in two before needing to recharge...

I agree, the software is the problem with the Zune. But once you learn the software, you have a great player on your hands.

If I play songs on this nonstop, I have gotten about a good 12 hours worth out of the battery. I would recommend turning off the wifi and dimming the light on the background like Mud recommended, you might be able to stretch it out to 14 hours which is listening to music alone.

Videos, you can get about 3-3.5 hours.

                Re: Ipod or Zune?

I don't even use ITunes for my IPod. I use winamp with the IPod plug-in. You can just drag and drop and don't have to sync. It does it as it copies the file over. You might want to see if there's a Zune plug-in for Winamp if the software is clunky. I detest ITunes with a passion. The only time I ever use ITunes is to copy over my podcasts, then I open the IPod with Winamp and copy the music and talk shows over.

JK. But seriously... iTunes is an amazing, simple interface. Couldn't be simpler, or prettier. I love it.

                    I've gotta agree....

I havent come across anything better...

Of course I now mostly obtain my music via legal means, and its tough to beat iTunes in that category.

I just like the whole drag and drop function on winamp plus the automatic sync. I still use ITunes for Video and Audio podcasts and for buying music and movies.

I just bought an Ipod recently and love it. I liked the Zune too, but I have an Imac so I went with the Ipod mainly for that reason.

Just picked up my Zune for $199 and $50 mail-in rebate. Had Office Depot price match Circuit City's $199. Office Depot was offering a $50 rebate. Now I'm off to see how to work this fine piece of electronics. Peace!!!!!!

You can use music bought off iTunes on a Zune btw with a program called Tunebite or Soundtaxi so that shouldn't be an issue.

I agree with this. I hate iTunes. It is clunky, crappy and extremely overrated IMO. I like Windows Media Player far more than iTunes. I am sure nobody here will agree . iTunes is the reason why I would not suggest an iPod.
