Re: James Bond: Quantum of Solace

I'm planning on seeing this movie tonight, but the reviews I've read and listened to on the radio don't have me as excited as I was a couple days ago. It sounds like the story is rather an afterthought compared to the action scenes.

So, do I drag my wife to see this movie or surprise her and actually go to Rachel's Wedding that has gotten better reviews...

They were talking a bit about this movie today on the newstalk station here. Actually it gives me some ammunition (good or bad) when I write up my thoughts after seeing the movie. (most likely going on Tuesday evening) I did hear something disappointing however, this is the first ever Bond movie where Bond doesn't say his trademark "The name's Bond, James Bond" line.

It just won't feel like a Bond movie without that line being uttered.

I didn't actually notice that though.

This is still a Bond movie, it's just that it's not as great as Casino Royale. Since it rebooted, they've tried to do some new things while holding on to the iconic past. I don't really mind that, but I hate seeing them tack in stuff lazily just to do it. They have one scene they lifted from Goldfinger, and the gun barrel intro is tacked on the end for the credits.

Not to worry. The wife knows how much I've been wanting to see QoS. I told her that the reviews have been a little mixed, and she said she could care less..that's the movie we're going to see. So, the balls stay intact.

Meh... great action movie, good follow-up to Casino Royale, but it definitely lost its charm that Casino Royale gave us. Still a fresh tomato and instant Blu-ray purchase no doubt. It just wasn't Casino Royale, though. Editing was slop, too.

However, it is highly recommended. Go see it.

Im not sure, I thought the movie was average at best, I didnt like the plot at all, the way some of the action scenes were shot made it difficult to follow and they did their best to tie this movie into the last one but it seemed like it was done in such a way that it made it seem as if it was an afterthought. I remember reading people saying this was more of a Bourne movie then a Bond movie and I agree 100% with that, this was mindless action from start to finish for the most part and thats not Bond imo.

100 percent agree. The action sequences were way to difficult to follow which directly effects the tension. The plot seemed rather insignificant. This was a very average movie.

well they did go out and get the actual Bourne series stunt people for this film, so yeah, they were intentionally going for Bourne-ish action scenes. They've even said so, which explains why some scenes had quick cuts and looked like they wanted us in a washing machine.

I also don't see how people can hate the plot. It's more like the execution of the plot that needs to be criticized. Sure, it's not the standard outlandish Bond villain, but the corporate tentacles of the Quantum organization pulling strings around the world gives Bond a constant "villain" presence that they can expand on in more films. It also allows them use material from current global politics driven by natural resources and shady corporate partnerships that we all can actually accept as happening today.

From reading this, it reminds me a lot of SPECTRE that was used in a lot of the earlier Bond films as the main villain. I am ok with this. Can't wait till Sunday to check this out.

Maybe it's because I could follow along with them rather easily...but I absolutely loved every action scene. The first one-on-one fight scene (think the one with the ropes) is one of my favorite fight scenes of all time. Amazing.

I liked it very much, Daniel Craig it freaking great as Bond. I didn't like it as much as Casino Royale but over all it was a good Bond movie. I liked the plot but thought they could have stretched the story out a bit longer to make it at least 2 full hours. The fight scenes were sweet, the ropes one is unbelievably awesome.
I've heard this "patience is a virtue" junk all my life. I'm happy to say I have no virtue, no scruples, and no desire to wait too long for anything. In my humble opinion instant gratification takes too long!

I wasnt aware that the Bourne stunt people were working on this, thats unfortunate imo.

Maybe you can correct me on the plot then...
