None of the Springfield locals broadcast HD. Much like the situation I had in Boise, the HD networks are brought in from an outside market...I imagine here from Chicago or St. Louis (hence the awkward resolution switch for commercials and why I can't get HD if there's any weather warnings which override the HD feed).

Maybe in three years when we relocate again we'll FINALLY have over-the-air HD...though the lack of a DVR options might kill that thought as well (my wife and I will watch our shows AFTER our son goes to bed).

the newest DTV receiver gives you tivo functions on OTA channels. It's not Tivo, but Direct TV's DVR Service.

Another thing better about Direct TV compared to Digital Cable is the sports channels. You get ESPN U, all the fox sports nets, ect, and the mlb extra inning/Sunday Ticket. Where i'm at now the trees are to bad for Direct Tv, so I got gay Media Com. I am moving in a few weeks, and the trees aren't as bad, so I can't wait to get Direct Tv, with all the sports channels stars, and the rest of the channels besides hbo, showtime, and max.

Hey man, I have Mediacom too, and it's allright. I have ESPNU, but they took FSN off to make room for Comcast Sports (which sucks), and no Sunday Ticket or anything like that. I also get 1 HBO channel free (don't know why that is).

DirecTV would be better, but for the price, Mediacom is a better value.

              so those that know directv:

if you have a Directv HR-250 (tivo build in that directv doesn't sell), will i receive those new hd channels? The tivo receivers are SO SO SO much better than the regular HD Dvrs that directv has.

I have a 5 lnb dish but the hr-250...If channels don't come on then i will haveh a tough choice.

I'm thinking about getting DirectTV when I move to Austin...

I'll be looking to hook up 3 HD tvs...

2 of which can run cable cards (no clue if DTV supports cable cards)

Any idea how much it would cost me to do that?

Is there a "cheap" (read: possibly illegal) way to do it? Feel free to PM me.

They haven't added a new channel in over 2 years. They don't even have comcast, and I'm only 3 hours from Chicago. I do get fsn midwest, but still, it's gay that where i'm at they don't care. I will still keep my phone and internet service, but still, it gets on my nerves how they seem to not care about the customers here.

This I know the answer is no. You need the HR20 because the new HD channels will be in MPEG4 and no other DTV receiver can do MPEG4.

My wife won't part with Tivo, so we kept the DTivo for SD stuff and I only record HD stuff on the HR20.

Any time you get a new install they normally wave all the costs at the price of a 2 year commitment to programming. Just basic programming though, not all the extra stuff like the Ticket.

If you are willing to pay for full installation you can probably get it without the commitment. I just signed up for 2 more years because they installed the 5 LNB dish and gave me the new HR20 and waived all charges if I committed. I have had DTV for 7 years now, so I had no problem with committing for 2 more years.

Re: Good news for DirecTV customers...

I actually have a DTV question that I can't find the answer to on their horrible website.

How much would it cost to get an HD-DVR and have it installed (i.e; the lines necessary to hook it up) from DTV? All I find on their website is the plan chooser and I can't find a list of their stand-alone products.

We have one HD-DVR already but I need to hook one up in my room. You guys think it'd be cheaper to buy the HD-DVR off EBay (about 230 bucks or so) and have them install the line or just get the whole thing from DTV and have them come install the line for free?

Basically just wondering the price of installation of the line.

I think the line is free, as long as it is a standard install. You probably could get the second HR20 for around $99 - 199 if not free from DTV. Call and tell them you want to speak to customer retention and tell them you want a HR20 and whats the best price they can give you.

Yeah, my bro was saying it should be free if you get the DVR directly from them....but I'll give them a call or have him do it (since he's the account holder) soon enough. I'm sick of not having an HD-DVR in my room to compliment my HDTV. It's like having a Ferrari run on 87.

I got my HD-DVR (HR20) for $99 after threatening to leave DTV. That's the only way you can get a good price on them. Otherwise they are like $299 I think.
