FIOS TV review from an old Comcast subscriber

Well i've had FIOS TV now for a couple of weeks and I can safely say it's quite superior to Comcast. The main difference? The regular non-HD channels. They are clearer and have less interference. I'm not going to lie and say they look almost HD or anything but they look as good as a non-HD channel can look. Also, another thing that is better is the closed caption. I like closed caption as I watch TV late at night and I don't want to upset my neighbors. The FIOS CC scrolls better, doesn't become garbled as much and has a much sharper font. Now even though a lot of people may not be interested in closed caption this still is something to mention because it shows what having superior bandwidth can do for a television service in general. The sound seems a bit better too but to be honest I never had much real issue with Comcast other than my sound cutting out and that turned out to be a cable on my stereo, not Comcast.

The biggest change to get used to of course is the guide. The guide and remote actually take a bit of getting used to, although the switch effort may not be as difficult as you think. The guide is overall better although I still have a couple of issues with it that somewhat hold it back overall. It works with MUCH, MUCH, MUCH less lag than Comcast. Nearly every button press is 100% instant. In fact, save for one button discussed later I’d go so far as to say there is zero lag. This is huge to me because that was one huge thing that I disliked about Comcast guide was the constant lag and the ol' "did I press the button hard enough?" debate. The guide is laid out in a logical fashion and is very easy to use. There is not an option to change colors or anything though like Comcast, to me a minor issue, since the FIOS guide looks better than Comcast to begin with color wise. It's easy to do searches and find your programs. It offers all the recording options that Comcast does, including the ability to manually record, extend the length of your recording by 5 or 10 or 15 minutes, etc (something F/X is notorious for doing is having their programs run over). It does tell you when there is a conflict for recordings but it doesn't tell you exactly where the conflict is, a minor annoyance. It gives you the option to do only new programs, or new & repeat, as well as keep only a certain number of episodes, etc, all the same as Comcast.

Now as for the issues I have with the guide, there are a few that need to be noted here. First of all there is no easy way to skip ahead by multiple hours or an entire day like Comcast has. This is annoying to me because if it's 8pm on a Monday I usually bring up the guide and then like to flip ahead to 8pm Tuesday and see what's on, then do the same for Wednesday, etc. On FIOS the only way to do this is to hold down the forward scroll button and wait...then wait....then wait some more. The second big annoyance is that there is no PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN feature in the guide. So if you like to flip thru a whole page of listings up or down you cannot do so. I called FIOS and they assured me both of these issues are known and they plan to add the go forward a day, page up and page down features to their new guide which is going to be released in September. The biggest time you notice these lack of features is when you initially setup your recordings because when you do so you like to flip around from day to day and up and down and find your stuff. So I will say although I hate these features missing I have not had as much of an issue with it now that all of my weekly recordings are all setup to record for me.

The remote is great and far superior to Comcast. Where do I start? Well first of all it's backlit which is a huge thing to me since I watch TV in the dark most of the time. Second of all it allows for up to four programmable devices. This allowed me to program my TV, my DVD and my stereo all on this remote (The FIOS STB takes up the fourth of course) which was something I couldn't do on my old Comcast remote since it only allowed for control of a total of 3 devices. Sure I know you can go buy a programmable remote and I plan to do that but this remote works so well I am now in no big hurry to do so. Lastly, and this is a big feature to a lot of people, the FIOS remote has a "SKIP AHEAD 30 SECONDS" button on it which is fantastic for skipping ahead of those pesky commercials. Comcast's remote does not have this but if you do some poking around on the net you can find a way to program the remote to have it (I did and it works great). This is the only single feature however that I have found lag on. When I first got the remote and got to a commercial I pressed the SKIP AHEAD button and nothing happened so I pressed it like 5 more times. Nothing happened for a second, then all of a sudden the program skipped ahead like 3 minutes or whatever and I had to rewind. It's not a big deal though, once you realize this you can just adjust so you hit the button 3 or 4 times, see if you're back to your program, if not, press again. Lastly the widgets feature is nice, it offers weather and traffic on the remote. However I can't get to it by pressing the A button on the remote for some reason, I have to go to Enhanced TV and choose Widgets there and then it works. FIOS has no explanation for this.

In closing I give the service an A- compared to Comcast's rating of a C+. I can't give FIOS an A+ until they fix the skip ahead a day, page up/page down, allow us to choose our own colors for our guide and fix the lag on the SKIP AHEAD button. Why may you ask is there such a difference rating wise from FIOS to Comcast? Simple reason: value. Although TV is TV overall and FIOS is just a bit better than Comcast, the truth is that you have to factor into the fact that I am now getting everything else I got from Comcast before channel wise, plus I get Cinemax, NFL Network (in HD too), a better remote and I pay $50 less a month. And you can't discount the fact that when I get a living room TV all I need is a basic set top box from Verizon and I can watch my recorded programs in any room, something Comcast cannot do because they don't have their set top box running through a home network like FIOS does (your STB connects to your FIOS router is how they accomplish this feat btw). That creates a pretty decent gap in the services and it's why FIOS is the clear winner. Comcast, well I don't know what to tell you, I would say I feel sorry for them, but guess what? I don't!

Great Review!! I also made the switch from Comcast to FIOS about 2 months ago, and am thrilled. I agree with everything you said.

About the page up/page down function, it is not the guide that won't do it, it's the remote. I found that the Comcast remote works with the FIOS box, and it does respond to the page up/page down buttons. In fact, I have a universal remote on one of my TV's, and before I returned my Comcast equipment, I programmed the PU/PD buttons and they work fine. Just some food for thought...

The only other thing I wish it would do (regarding the whole house DVR) is allow me to schedule recordings from the other TV's in the house. I have the DVR hooked up to my HDTV in a bedroom, but when I'm watching TV in the living room, I would like to be able to set a recording.

I'm waiting for FIOS to become available in my area and I will surely be switching. How's your FIOS internet working ?

Interesting, so in theory all I need to do is find the programmable code for those functions and then program it onto those two Widget buttons which are unused. I'll have to check that out, thanks for the info! That would be massively helpful IMO.

Well that's even better. It's not even a close race there between Comcast and FIOS. FIOS blows it out of the water, then grabs it out of the sky, puts it back down in the water and then blows it up again. LOL!! I got the 15mb/download+2mb/upload for an additional $10 and let me tell you, it's fast as anything i've ever seen.

For example, I used to download Madden movies from IGN and it'd take like 20 to 25 minutes to download one big HD movie. The other day I downloaded 2 movies at once and it took 13 minutes. Gameplay on Xbox Live is fantastic, I've never noticed one hiccup playing football (a notoriously finicky application to play online) since I've begun playing. Also, the router page is extremely nice looking, easy to use and very elegant overall (best router page setup I've ever seen).

Overall I don't hesitate to give it an A+ rating compared to Comcasts C rating. I had some issues with Comcast "hiccups" on occasion and sometimes getting disconnected on downloads, but those have all went away since I switched to FIOS. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who has the ability to get it in their area.

Good info. FIOS just got the final approval from the mayor of my town, the bulk of the work is done so I should have it soon. Last time I called they said we're scheduled for Q3, so I should be hooked up by September.

Re: FIOS TV review from an old Comcast subscriber

This may help with the missing page up, page down, day forward, day backward features that I describe in my review (have yet to try it though)

              Remap a Key

This is the general procedure for remapping. Several common mapping options specific to the Motorola DVR are listed below.

              1. (Option) Press and release the device key to make it the default.
              2. Press and hold the "Setup" button until a device key blinks twice.
              3. Type in the code 994. A device key will blink twice.
              4. (Option) Press and release the device key for the source device.
              5. Press the key to get the code from. This can be:
              1. Another button with an existing code
              2. Press and release "Setup", then type in a 3- or 5-digit code. The code is called an 'Extended Function Code' (EFC). Most of the silver remotes use 5-digit codes. Most others use 3-digits. In most cases, you just add '00' to the front of the 3-digit code to get a 5-digit code (00173 = 173).
              6. (Option) Press and release the device key for the destination device.
              7. (Option) Press and release "Setup" to create a shifted key.
              8. Press and release the button you want to put the code on.
              9. If the remap is successful, a device key will blink twice.

A list of Extended Function Codes (EFC's) for many device codes can be found at hifi-remote.com Advanced Codes. See Checking your Device Code if you do not know the code for your device.

              Sending an EFC code manually

You can experiment with an Extended Function Code (EFC) before mapping it to a key by sending it manually.

              1. Press and release the device button for the device you want to send the EFC code for.
              2. Press and release the "Setup" button.
              3. Type in the 3- or 5-digit EFC code (the 5-digit code is usually just two zeroes followed by the 3-digit code.)

              EFC list

This is a list of the Extended Function Codes (EFC) that the Motorola DVR recognizes from a Univeral Electronics/One-For-All style remote. For the silver Comcast remotes, you usually need to add two extra zeroes to the front (example: 00173 for 30-second skip instead of the listed 173.)

207 Fast Forward 208 OnDemand 209 Rewind 210 Preview List 211 Stop 236 Tuner Swap

              Also of interest:

              Add A Tuner Swap Button

The following technique can be used to map an unused or unneeded button on the "silver" remote to the tuner swap command. The Motorola DVR contains two tuners. Some versions of the "silver" remote lack the DVR-specific buttons, including the "swap" button that tells the DVR to swap the "background" tuner (which can record but does not display on-screen) with the "foreground" tuner (the tuner that is actively displaying on your TV). A common use for this command is to switch to a tuner that is not currently recording a program in order to watch another live program without disrupting the ability to pause or rewind the first program.

Method 1 (Comcast URC-106XXXXX Silver Remote):

              1. Press the "Cable" button at the top of the remote to put it into Cable Box control mode.
              2. Press and hold the "Setup" button until the "Cable" button blinks twice.
              3. Type in the code 994. The "Cable" button will blink twice.
              4. Press (do not hold) the "Setup" button.
              5. Type in the code 00236.
              6. Press whatever button you want to map the tuner swap command to (ex: PiP Swap). The "Cable" button will blink twice if successful.

Note: It was common for some Comcast remotes that had transport keys, but none of the PIP keys (URC1067BG1), to have the swap programmed on the TV/VCR key. This does not work on boxes with the Microsoft TV Foundation Interface (currently Washington State).

Haha, yeah like in Seinfeld, the march in is great! I marched in with my equipment, told the girl at the desk all my beefs, she agreed their customer service was terrible and needed fixed, then I marched on out. I know nothing will probably come of it but they will get about $200 less a month from me and I've done my part to convince others to switch to Verizon as well so I'm hurting them more than just my own "paltry" $200. Competition is great!

I've had Fios internet for about 2 years. Love it...no problems. We got Fios TV shortly after it came out....and cancelled within 30 days. My problems with it?

                      - There are a couple rooms we don't have a box in. With Fios you HAVE to have a box....and of course you have to pay for it. That's part of the reason I don't have Dish or Direct 'cause I'm not gonna pay for every room.

                      - I really didn't like the guide. It was horrible back then. Sounds like it may have gotten better but still needs help.

                      - Didn't like the remote.

                      - Had some artifacts on some channels in HD.

Now it might sound like I don't like to change and it's definitely not that....I tried it for about 3-4 weeks and cancelled right before the 30 day deadline. I will say the regular channels looked a bit better but not anything extremely noticeable. They also had a few extra HD channels, although for the most part they were garbage channels with nothing of interest to me on them.

I would try Fios again, if I had something to gain. However, it would be the same or more than I'm paying now (about $80/month) so I don't see the benefit. If they come down in price or offer some insane amount of HD channels that cable doesn't have I may consider it.

their guide (as my review said) and remote are both pretty comparable to comcast, and in some ways better. if this upgrade coming in september does what they say it will then be better.

as for fios needing a better deal, have you inquired about their $99 bundle where you get internet, phone and tv for $99 a month? it's a pretty good deal, of course needing the extra boxes may wipe out your savings but just a thought..

Isn't the bundle the 5/2 internet? I have the 15/2 internet....otherwise it is a pretty good deal. Plus, while part of the issue about needing the boxes is paying for them one problem is we currently have the TV in the bedroom on a chest of drawers. The TV barely fits on there and there's no room for a box, unless it's on top of the TV, which would look like crap.

Thanks for the reminder on the bundle though....I'll have to check that out in Sept. after they change the guide.

Have a link to the bundle? I can't find it on their site now.

i heard they cut the old cable line to your house if you get FIOS installed... is that true? I still get the cheapest comcast tv package (local channels plus basic cable) for $15/mo, and don't want to be forced to a higher priced package with FIOS.
