Good pet for a 5 year old...
Well its that time for a small pet for our 5 year old...we also have a 1 year old. We have decided no dogs or cats, as we dont want a dog to mess up our backyard or smell up our house, so were looking at...turtles, hamsters, gerbils, fish... you know the drill. Anyone with any experience with any of these critters please give me your 2 cents. Thanks!Tags: None -

Definitely get a fish. Anything else and it'll disappear in the house somewhere only to return months later, 5x bigger, and looking for blood.Comment

I had hampsters at that age. Great pet because they are interactive(don't get the dwarf kind, those are vicious), so the kid can pick them up and play with them if they want. It is the perfect balance of small and fun. The maintainence involves cleaning out the cage every few weeks(which will fall on your shoulders, no 5 year old is going to do that) and making sure they have food and water. No need to worry about leaving if for a few days, etc. Great first pet, I was never a big fish person because they just swim around, not too exciting for a young child.Comment

Yeah hampsters were fun at that age, thats what my vote would be. I had one, and I brought it to the playground, and some cold hearted bitch stepped on it, and I remember running home crying...Rather be dead than RED!

Re: Good pet for a 5 year old...
My nephew is 5, and he had a fish for a while. I guess it was good... not really much to play with or interact with.
Now he's got a hermit crab after a weekend trip to the beach. Not sure how easy it is to get a hold of one of those where you are, but it's decent. If you get a smaller one, you can get an extra shell and it'll switch.
That was an interesting thing when my nephew's hermit crab switched shells. My girlfriend picked up what she thought was the hermit crab and it was just an empty shell. "Where's the crab?" she said. We were all like "uh oh" thinking it had died. But it actually did move into the bigger shell in it's cage.
Just some food for thought.Originally posted by DaImmaculateONeHow many brothers does Sub-zero running around in his clothing? No one can seem to kill the right one.Comment

If you are going to care for the animal, then I'd have to say a ferret.
They can sleep in a cage and are very playful. Definitely a far superior animal to the other options. Only down side is their mischevious side and penchant for hiding shiny objects or remotes.Comment

Hamster would be cool, but you had a concearn about the smell in the house and hamsters cages reak of piss and ****, and you have to constantly change out the sawdust type stuff out of his cage weekly or the smell will get pretty bad.
A fish is ordorless and it's faily easy to clean a tank. Plus you can put a lot of cool stuff looking stuff in the tank and it'll be easy and fun for your son to feed the fish.Comment
