I'll second the turtle. They get big quick and they obviously have more waste then a fish. Jo you are going to need a vacuum and you have to mess with that every week and a half to two weeks. They are hardy so that helps when you need to be away. I went with a 10 gallon tank knowing it wouldn't last a year. I'm saving up right now to get at least a 30 gallon tank and stand with a under gravel filter. Me personally I rarely try and touch it, if I put him/her in my palm it just hides inside it's shell or tries to bit your palm. I had a gold fish in the tank for about 4 months but at first the fish picked on the turtle then after the turtle got bigger he started hurassing the fish and chasing and snapping at it. I took the fish out of the tank because I didn't want it to die from stress and to give the two a cooling off period. The turtle would leave the fish alone for a week or so before messing with him again. One of the times I separated him I didn't treat the water properly and the fish died. But I think they are pretty entertaining.

Anyone with any experience with any of these critters please give me your 2 cents. Thanks!
A Small fish tank with a few red belly piranhas, or maybe even a St. Bernard, Rotweiller?

LOL seriously though, how bout a Gerbil, or Guinnie pig. Maybe a small fish tank with some low upkeep non heated tank with variable goldfish.

When I first opened this thread I was excited for the soon-to-be pet owner.

Now that I read about the animals and the amount of care I think of it as more of a headache.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace
