Re: Amy Winehouse
They were two very different people with very different situations. The only similarities were that they were celebrities and drug users whose use eventually took their lives (allegedly).
A thread about the death of someone should not just be restricted to the way he or she died. Hence why people talk about her music in this thread and Heath's roles in his. 24th is looking only at the way they died and trying to say the public attitude towards each should be the same. That's very short-sighted, IMO, after looking at the details of their lives.Bears | Bulls | Cubs | Illinois | #Team3Some

Right, and it should be to an extent.

I don't feel one should be held in higher ****** over the other. Both were people who lived in the public eye. No one knows what they dealt with on a daily. Its easy to judge from the outside looking in. Just like it would be easy for me to judge you looking into your class house or vise versa.
Bottom line two people have passed away far too young. Its disrespectful to judge and throw rocks.Comment

Re: Amy Winehouse
What im saying is, if you feel a certain way about a person battling addiction....if you feel its a selfish act, if you feel its disrespecting yourself, if you dont think that kind of person is worth mourning since its their fault.....I would think that goes across the board, great movies or not.....obviously it doesnt for some. Thats fine.
buy hey, I dont really want to go on about it. Donf want to disrespect the deceased.....
RIP Amy and HeathComment

Re: Amy Winehouse
When I found out she died, I had the same reaction for her that I had for Pookie when he died in New Jack City.
Sucks for her family and friends though.#RespectTheCultureComment

Re: Amy Winehouse
I respect your opinion and understand where your coming from. Yeah Heath was more productive artistically during his time on earth. But people are throwing the word "selfish" around. Saying things like she didn't care about her family ect ect ect. Heath had a young daughter and that seems to be ignored. IMO that is just as bad if not worse.

Regardless, it's a tragedy that each died, as they were extremely talented people who succumbed to addictive substances. They probably got addicted as youngsters, too, as many do.
I don't mean to disrespect the dead either. I'm just trying to show you guys why people may have different opinions of the two. Both deserve to rest in peace regardless of their problems during their lives.Bears | Bulls | Cubs | Illinois | #Team3Some

Re: Amy Winehouse
In my opinion they are viewed differently and should be. Heath Ledger was, as I understand it, addicted to prescription painkillers. He mixed them in some fashion and it resulted in his death. Amy Winehouse was addicted to drugs and alcohol. She mixed them in some fashion and it resulted in her death.
That's where the similarities end. The big difference is that Heath took prescription painkillers in relation to health issues he suffered from (severe insomnia for one) whereas Amy took drugs and drank simply to party. Also, as others have pointed out, Heath was a professional about his craft and what he gave back to his fans via his craft whereas Amy often did not, in particular in a lot of her shows, showing up trashed, etc.
Although I view the latter as a lesser reason to distinguish their deaths it most certainly was a factor in the public's perception of their deaths.
In my opinion Heath Ledger's death was an utter tragedy and preventable if someone had intervened. Amy Winehouse's death was simply her own doing and unpreventable, and many, many folks did intervene and it didn't make one bit of a difference.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

Many musical artist who suffer from Manic Depression chose to use Illegal Drugs. Ray Charles used Heroin for 20 years as a way to deal with his Manic Depression. As did Curt Cobain.. instead of stuff like "Lithium" which basically turns you into a zombie after long periods of usage.
By some estimates, about 3 million people in the United States suffer from manic depressive disorder. The rate of alcoholism and drug abuse within that group of people is said to be three times higher than that of the general population. Cocaine, heroin and alcohol are often used to self-medicate, but they only end up making the problem worse.
About 1 out of 5 people with manic depressive disorder commit suicide.
What a confounding disorder of the mind, this melancholia mated with mania, the driving force behind mad genius.
Ray Charles, for instance, opted to treat his manic depression with heroin for nearly 20 years. Like Winehouse, he sang a song about his resistance to getting professional help.
I dont need no doctor for my prescription to be filled, Charles sang. Only my babys arms could ever take away this chill.
On the other hand, Kurt Cobain searched long and hard, to no avail, to cure his manic depression. In 1991, as the frontman for the grunge group Nirvana, he wrote a song called Lithium, the name of a powerful antidepressant. Three years later, after being released from drug rehab, Cobain committed suicide.Last edited by bigfnjoe96; 07-27-2011, 01:01 PM.Comment

If you look at the general population vs. those in music the music industry is filled with much more substance abusers than the general population. One could attribute that to there being more manic depressives in the music industry or more realistically one could attribute it to the lifestyle of a musician that involves recreational drug use encouraged by those in the industry and those who follow it, that develops into a full blown case of addiction. Couple that with unlimited funds and being surrounded by yes-men and you've got a one way ticket to Club 27.
In other words, if Amy Winehouse had been an accountant at JP Morgan Chase it's very likely she would never have been diagnosed as a manic depressive or drank and did drugs to an excess either one.
It's sad but this is the lifestyle people often expect of their rock stars and it's like the prophecy of it becomes the reality. Very few rock stars who have been in the industry a long time can even claim to have never taken a drug or drank. About the only one I can think off offhand is Gene Simmons of Kiss, but he's a rare bird. Still doing well too though, although I don't know what's going on with that helmet hair of his.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20
