    Re: Clockwise or Counterclockwise?

Your Daily Fix of Neuroscience, Skepticism, and Critical Thinking

"This news article, like many others, ignores the true source of this optical illusion and instead claims it is a quick test to see if you use more of your right brain or left brain. This is utter nonsense, but the “right-brain/left brain” thing is in the public consciousness and won’t be going away anytime soon. Sure, we have two hemispheres that operate fine independently and have different abilities, but they are massively interconnected and work together as a seamless whole (providing you have never had surgery to cut your corpus callosum).

We also do have hemispheric dominance, but that determines mostly your handedness and the probability of language being on the right or the left. There is also often asymmetry for memory, with some being right or left hemisphere dominant. But none of this means that your personality or abilities are more right brain or left brain. That much is nonsense."

I have an older laptop and you can see a frame delay when they change the direction of the dancer. It goes back and forth between counter and clockwise.

Does this switch directions? I saw counter-clockwise, and then clockwise, and then back to counter, and then back to clockwise.

I don't see how it switches back and forth because I cannot for the life of me see the thing go counterclockwise.

It does, but you can also trick yourself into making it change. Watch the shadow.... and when you see the swinging foot shadow hit at 11 o'clock, look up and the body should be going the same way... same thing to switch it again, watch the shadow and when it his 3 o'clock it should switch back.

Nothing but a blabbering way of saying depth of perception and the manner in which you're looking at it. Same as I already explained.

That's not his point. His point is using this as a test for this left-brain right-brain is stupid.

I wouldn't call this a test... just for fun.

Admit that it brought out some interesting things even in this thread about how people percieve things.

I can't get it to switch. I've tried but it just won't work for me.

I was reading through this whole thread and I was getting ready to post an explanation...the whole left brain/right brain thing is a huge myth. The Stroop effect thing (where you say the colors and not read the words) is caused by the fact that you are conditioned to read the words and you can't help but not read the words.

Clockwise. I think I'm left brained because I don't try to look into the future too much. I'm a present and past type of person. My religion is very importan though. (Not sure what this has to do with whether you're left/right brained)

This is strange, it seems to change depending on my mood, I am now seeing it go counter clockwise.
